It may be a bit vague, so I'm going to explain it fully here.
If you want to show off work, just post it. If you want critique, rates, C&C, say that you do.
If a member posts just showing off a signature, you can rate it if you want, but you can also add a couple of comments relating to it, questions, or whatnot. If all they want is to show it to you and are not intending to receive rates, then why do you need to give them? This doesn't mean that you can just one-word, one-sentence, or say things like "Good job" or "10/10" and that, but try to add to the thread a little - 1/2 word comments are as spam as anywhere else.
If a member posts saying they want C&C, critique or rates, you will be expected to give them a good amount of critique. This is explained below.
You should try to comment depending on how new/experienced the designer is; a new designer may not understand terms such as blending and focus, so explain these and make it simpler - if you suggest changing something, explain how to.
You can comment on the following when you rate work that the member wants C&C for, along with anything else. Even make this into a standard format if you wish.
- Colours
- Flow/blending
- Style
- Focus / how busy it is
- Appeal to you
- Text
- Border
- Size
- YOUR opinion on it generally
Even if you think it's perfect, say why you think that; what stood out to you, what did you really like?
The other issue is marks out of 10; I don't think art can be graded in that way and it doesn't really help the designer (although some would argue that it's a scale of where you're at). It's your choice whether you add them, but I'd prefer not.
If you are a newer designer or less graphically-minded, you can give a comment based on what you can see and what you like about it. This could be saying that the colours look good and you think it all matches up, or more than that.
If you have questions, do ask them
