I've been thinking lately about how an admin should treat their members. There are members who break the rules, and normally they get warned or punished for doing so. Whether you're on or off the computer, even admins make mistakes. A good example the other day is I ended up being rude to my Mom. I didn't really mean to, but I was frustrated, and I let my emotions get to me. My Mom made a similar response because of it. Our arguements don't last long because we get along together for the most part. But it really made me stop to think if sometimes our punishments are really fair toward others, when we also make mistakes in our own life? They're different, but everyone makes mistakes, and everyone is brought up differently. What's your take on this?

Admins should have some level of Elitism, same with parents, someone has to throw down the law, to the ones below them, they can choose to follow thier own rules or not.

I can't get over the fact that you called your mom an admin. Obviously, I didn't call my Mom an admin. I wasn't talking about her. I only gave her as an example of how an admin might treat someone else offline.

Thanks for saying that, now I know not to join your board because I don't want to get banned. Others who see this message will feel the same. Basically, you're taking your bad mood out on someone else, and that's not really an answer to this post.

most admins dont treat members as they do errant children though . I DONT punish my members that make mistakes . I remind them ( warn them ) then follow it up with a ban if the rules are blatently ignored or broken. Unfortunately I cannot ban my child ( sometimes I might wish ) when he pushes the limit . So I dont think many admins are easily compared to parents . Plus as from the membership in here , a lot of admins in forums are themselves teens ( kids ) or very young adults

Our arguements don't last long because we get along together for the most part. But it really made me stop to think if sometimes our punishments are really fair toward others, when we also make mistakes in our own life? They're different, but everyone makes mistakes, and everyone is brought up differently. What's your take on this? Well in terms of admins being hypcritical, here's what I've got to say... In terms of how they act towards members, some behave good towards them, where as others behave like total hot-heads. As an admin of my own forum. I don't necessarily punish people for the slightest things (I admit I used to lol) they do wrong, if that's the case, I'd just kindly point the way to the right path but if they continue to be ignorant of my advice even after many attempts of reasoning, that's when the fire burning, gradually burns brighter; and I begin to issue warnings and in rare cases, bans (this has rarely happened on my forum ). Overall, an admin should know when to issue warnings (or bans), and when not to. Example: If a member (who just joined or is still a member of your forum), who posted something that *wasn't* in the topic of the board, your reaction should in fact be something to the degree of.... What you SHOULDN'T do in that situation, is say something to the degree of... The reason why I'm saying this, is because they will just either leave, or continue to make havoc worse, and if the members see it as something that you've done wrong and you continue to keep up the charade, then they'll leave your forum, but (the following action shouldn't be recommended ALL the time) though, if the member persists in being a pain in the (you know what) - REGARDLESS of your instructions, then you can issue a warning. Now here's an example of when it is OK to use warnings: Example:If a member (who has either just joined OR is an experienced member of your forum), posted something that violated the ToS, your reaction should in fact be something to the degree of.... What you SHOULDN'T do in a situation like this is blast them, UNLESS they use profanity in their language and have no intention of stopping. The right thing to do there, would be to issue a COMPLETE BAN of their account. Alternatively, if you that they CAN improve their behaviour, just give them a temperary ban (of say 3 months - maybe longer. That's up to you). The problem is that, if you forget to remind them (either kindly or in rare situations, harshly), then you can say goodbye to your forum. EDITED: In terms of comparisons to parents, they make the non-legal rules in a family. Their rules are said to help get you out of trouble, instead of getting INTO trouble That's all from me Please don't flame me for what I said, I was only giving advice and stating my opinion, in response to Charlotte's thread. I know the admins on various ProBoards Forums have a different approach to this, but I just gave mine

I treat my members as friends. If your friend makes a simple mistake, you don't ban them from your life, you sit down and discuss it with them.

You just can't always read sarcasm over the Internet. It happens all the time with people. And thanks to everyone for the advice. Tobi, I thought the same thing. We don't ban people that do wrong doings toward us no matter how badly they treated us because there really is no way to, why ban them on forums? I know there is a time to ban someone like they're purposely spamming the forum. Here is an example. Some members get banned for being racial. A lot of people don't like it, but you might even know someone you love dearly who's a racial right? If they're on a forum though, they get banned for it. Would that make it right? We don't ban the person because we can't, and if we knew them and loved them, we wouldn't if we had the choice, right? Is it any different with others? Remember, this is only an example given.

The most I do is ban spammers, and warn people who argue too much... If they don't follow the rules, first time I just tell them to watch it next time, the next time a warning, and if they do it again, I suspend them for a couple days... if they come back and start again, I ban them. Simple as that.

I guess i'm lucky that my members are my friends from school. We don't really argue or flame, so i seldom have to put on my "admin hat". The most i had to do was to gently remind them to stay off the descriptive stuff in a story thread, that's all.
