You have to own the actual products that your downloading for it to be legal i think

You have to own the actual products that your downloading for it to be legal i think That's correct, and if you do download them without owning the original game you must delete it from your computer within 24 hours (I think).

It really depends, if the copyright is expired, then i think it isn't illegal, otherwords, you must own the product you are trying to download.

As much as I like emus, I'd suggest removing the link from your first post - it isn't legal, it's one of those issues where people online have just about made up their own laws for it (much like with P2P filesharing).
You are allowed backups of files you already own, except where otherwise prohibited (and some games do mention this in the EULA), but the legality of abandonware (games no longer supported by the publisher) is still disputed, and the same goes for the 'trial purposes' argument someone posted above (you can't take a game home from a shop to try it, you have to rent it or get a demo if one is available).
