This isn't a problem on the sites I run or help run...yet...but i'm seeing it on a lot of other sites. This "wowposter" signs up onto many, many different forums and starts posting hundreds of spam posts at random. It could really destroy a site. What kind of safeguards does Proboards have against this?
Just FYI, I turned the name "wowposter" into a reserved name on my boards. I don't know if this will actually do anything, though.

Hi, putting that into reserved name won't help much, it registers under different usernames & different emails. best thing to do is IP ban it if you see it post.

I would rather use some proboards service that prevents auto registrations in the first place.

Hello wynnyelle,
Proboards allows you to approve all accounts that sign up, before they are allowed to login and post on your forum. This feature is in:
Admin > (Customize Your Forum) General Settings > Limited Registration > Yes
Enabling this option will make it so all new accounts must be approved by a staff member before their account becomes active.
There are also other options you can choose, like making the forum private for Guests. "Guests must login" etc..
Hope this is what you are after..

Just had this on my forum, caught it fairly early on so only had to remove eleven posts. IP is 221.221.172.133.

Hi all,
I have had this spammer register on two of my forums. Banning his IP Address didn't work as he registered again with a different one. He also goes by the username "wowpower" but I am convinced it is the same person. It looks as though wow-anything is likely to be used.
Good luck everyone!

I've been perplexed by wowposter, since I saw his activity in the sitemeter as going directly to registration, which was odd, and signing on by that same IP later but not getting picked up by sitemeter, which is odder.
He's yet to post anything on mine, although it does come on from time to time.
There was 1 long spam post in the spam forum in what I assume was Chinese that could not appear as Chinese characters (the sitemeter registers wowposter from China), but that was as a guest (guests can post there) and a little while before wowposter appeared. From what I've heard, ProBoards has had trouble with random Chinese spam in the boards in the past.

Just keep banning the spammers, as if they are human, they will get bored, and if they are bots, they will possibly run out of IPs they can use (depending on how they change them).

Anywhere like ProBoards... blogs, forums, etc are susceptible to these spam bots, as they are simply doing what a genuine poster would do, and that's make a post.

It is annoying though I had to deleted the wowposter thing and 16 threads, I did ban the IP but is it a bot? I thought it was a person and wont a bot be on a proxy?
Sorry not hijacking thread just thought I'd ask while on topic of this WOWposter thing.

There is a feature to delete all posts by a user, so however many posts they make, the effort needed to rectify the issue is the same, and that is typing in a username and clicking a button.

I've had this problem too & so has my friend. I deleted the account before he did any damage to mine, but he spams my friend's forum (though admittedly she won't ban him???) He hasn't bothered signing up on mine again, obviously he just wants to join as many as possible. He claims to be a 37 year old male, advertising Wow (cheap) Gold if you're not sure what to look out for, and as someone else said also spamming chinese wiriting. Edit: I just googled 'him' & he seems to like Proboards forums, the deader the better but not always the case as mine is active

Make sure you do this before deleting the account, however. Kimberly, indeed, it is annoying, however, the only way to stop it from happening is to stop people from registering and posting altogether.
