She thinks the game gives her computer a virus, but it never said: "Your computer has a Trojan Horse, or anything.

Like Super Samio said, any genuine copy of any game by any reputable software company will not contain any form of computer virus on it. Your mum just needs to be assured of that.
Edit: Sorry, your friend's mum. (Misread that first post ever so slightly)

Does the official release of Spore have a virus. NO, It has DRM. Do illegal releases of spore have a virus. Yes, some do.

The official game can't have a virus, or they'd get sued. Besides, EA is a well known and respected company. If your friend downloaded it instead, then it's possible.

I know he bought it for $49.95 and then he downloaded it onto his and his mom's colmputer, but I think it's still EA, but I don't know if he actually bought the game on a disc.

It doesn't matter who made the game, whether it's Microsoft, Square Enix or EA, it will never have a virus, unless he downloaded it illegally. It's not the company that put the virus on the illegal copy, but the person who owns it then redistribute it.

I don't know if it was an official site, and I don't know how he got it, but I know it was for money, so could it have been illegal?

It's not the company that put the virus on the illegal copy, but the person who owns it then redistribute it. It could still have a virus tho. MP3 players, Digital photo frames, and even software on a commercially produced CD can have a virus. Companies make mistakes. (Sony basically included a virus with some of their music CD's in an effort to prevent their music from being pirated.) However this release from EA is virus free. However if he purchased the game from a store... But then downloaded it from the internet to avoid EA's DRM... Than the downloaded version could still contain a virus. I am unaware of any legal downloaded versions of Spore (Aside from the demo of the creature creator)
