Guests Must Log-InHow do you feel about the practice of leaving a forum in Guests Must Log-In Mode? Some people say they do this to protect their forum's content, to make it more difficult for people to plagiarize it for use on other forums. Some people do this simply to get people to register to view the board, either in hopes the person will stay, or to increase their forum's member count. Others think that leaving a forum in guests must log-in mode is not the best thing to do. It is thought that if people want to steal content bad enough, all they have to do is register an account and steal away. Some people are of the opinion that a forum should show what they have to offer to guests, so that it may persuade them to join if they like what they see.So what do you think about leaving a forum in guests must log-in mode? Debate. The underlined part in the quoteis what I believe. If you MAKE guests log in and they do register an account, they might not have wanted to part of the forum, but wanted to look at the contents, there for you just made an unactive member. You may get up to...40 members lets say, but lets say 30 people signed up just because they wanted to try it out, but because they were forced to log in before looking at contents, they didn't want to be on it anymore, so either they delete their account or become unactive. Then, if that IS the case, your back to 10 members after an activity check. ((Not every site has them, but RPG sites which is what I make, do have them most of the time. Only on rare occasions do they not)).

I think it's pretty useless. I mean, at my point of view, many people like to VIEW the board before they join, making sure they're joining a good site and not a cruddy one. I always review sites before joining them. I will not join non-active sites, and well, if the guest want to view the site first... and they MUST log in... then, they just lost a member, possibly. I agree with Chidori Rox...

I agree with the boatload of people that have said making you sign up to view your board is stupid. I can totally understand not letting guest post so you don't get hundreds of retards with auto-bots posting crap but what harm can be done by letting guests view your board? and yeah, if I gotta sign up to just read topics I get really pissed off and just leave oh and I just noticed Chidori's post, a very good point. like a post I made along time ago "1000 members and 10 posts means your board sucks!"

But I have a general board too that is open to view but they must register to post . As far as plagiarism goes , there is little very original text or graphics that I feel a need to protect . For that we have " private passworded forums "

I'm iffy about whether or not guests should be able to see the forum or not. When it comes to ProBoards, a free forum provider, I feel it is necessary to be able to view a forum when you are a guest. Since there are so many forums out there, you need to see if the forum is successful first. When it comes to a free forum service, almost every subject has been covered at least once or twice and they are most likely all the same, sort of.
I'll give an example: Think of all the Harry Potter forums out there that are hosted by ProBoards, billions upon billions. Either they specialize on talking about Harry potter in general and it's more of a fanbase, or it's a HP role-play. You really can't choose which one you want to join unless you can see what the forum offers and if other people think it's good. But when you think of a forum that has to be paid for for it to stay up, the forum really needs to be unique and offer the best out there. Having someone tell you about this forum that is super cool and whatnot, makes you want to join, knowing that the people who run it are paying for it, it must be good, even if you can't really see what it offers at first.

I think guests should be able to view a forum, so they can see what's like. I'm so against Guests Must Log-In, that on my site there's a rule that says if your going to post a link, make sure the "Guests Must Log-In" thing isn't up, or you'll link will be deleted.

I say you should never make it like that because the guest wont see what the forum has to offer then they will just leave.

Yeah I was never a fan of making guests log on in order to view a forum either. Or the posts. When I come to those I just leave and don't look back because I don't want to waste my time registering on a site I might not like in the first place.

I used to have my whole forum set so that guests can post anywhere, but I disabled it when none of them would sign up and all they’d post is advertisements. I also had to switch over when I got Japanese spam threads posted all over my forum, I banned the IPs but since there were so many of them I had no choice but to prevent them from posting. Now I have one forum for guests to post in and that’s my forum support forum.

I believe making a guest log in is taking away the freedom of choice. If they log in and decide they don't like it they're just going to leave.

One sentence comments are not productive. Please post at least 4 sentences , so that you have a chanc to clarify on your comments , thank you.

The only reason why I keep my board on Guests Must Log In is because it's private. I agree that if it weren't private making guests log in wouldn't work. I've clicked away from a couple forums because I couldn't see what I would be joining. I personally think that making all guests register will decrease sign ups, because the guest might just be joining a one-thread forum that the creator left a long time ago. That would be a waste, and not a lot of people would want that.

I never join a forum that does that because you dont know what youre even signing up for,you should be able to sample a site first...like cheese....sorry bad example >.< Well, sometimes they don't want you to sample. They are private forums and only want you to join by invite. Other reasons are that they can't stand spam bots being able to see their forum and spam it up (if possible), they don't know that you can turn off all boards to guests and yet still let them see it. I personally wouldn't use it, but I can see a use for it. There are many reasons to use Guests Must Log-In, many of which I haven't discovered. BTW: You need to have at least 4 sentences in your post in this board.
