I like to have a general idea of whats going on so i don't make characters that are completely out of sync with what the admin wants. But other then that i like to go with the flow. Most of the rp sites i have been on have been run like Tori's. Where the admin just gives a basic plot and the rest is up to the rpers.

I'm in the works of a role-playing board coming soon which has a relatively simple plot working for it. If it were me, I think it's best to let the players know the setting first-hand, basic groundwork, and let them be surprised by certain decisions as they come along. On the other hand, I'm quite fond of collaborative effort on behalf of the role-players to decide how things go. Nothing finer than doing a fairly big-scale multiple person RP topic while arranging the whole sequence on IM while chatting away, and archiving it.

I'm still not sure if my site is in the minority (or majority) or sites where the play is not done by starting an RP thread in an IC location. With me, we just RP in the IC location's thread. That's why I'm not sure if this refers to the RP thread version of play or the general plot of a game.
For my general plot, there never has really been one, just a continuation of the ongoing game. The admins will nudge the plot towards certain events with their characters which is quite subtle but keeps a plot going like that.
