Well! On my journey of making an RP (that I hope will be successful), I've done a week of research for the plot (and soon to be more), but hope to start doing some things with people to find out what they like and what are complete turn offs.
SO! What is a good word limit? What word limit do you find simply irresistible?
I, personally, hate the idea of word limits over 500, and any posts under 200 words just make me queezy. BUT! I have always loved no post limits so everyone is welcome. What's your ideas on the topic?

What you should do is let people roleplay to their ability and not require a word count but advise that you should attempt to post similar length responses during an RP.
Example:
RPer1: 450 words RPer2: (Should aim for 400-500 words)
Something like that because I hate when someone posts maybe like 800-1000 words and someone response with like a 300 word paragaph..

Two-hundred is perfect in my eyes. It's enough for the newbs to not feel too intimidated and to encourage them to add details and for the more advanced members it's good because they don't always feel up to posting six-hundred words plus. Having no word limit, well, it attracts people even worse than newbs. Two-hundred gets my vote.
[edit] Also what the member above me said.

I prefer between a 300 and 500. However, in my own roleplays I usually tell people to write as much as they want and that quality is better than quantity. I also tell them to mirror each others post. If you have someone specifically you are interacting with or are in a rp then try to match the person with the longest posts. A little more slack is given if this person is writing 1,000 word posts or similar.

You mean a word minimum? It all depends on the level you want your site to be. Beginner sites usually don't even have one, intermediate tends to be around 50, and advance can range anywhere from 150 - 400 I've found.

On my polar bear RP, the limit was 5. made the action pretty exciting.

From my Rules:
"While we think that imposing a minimum posting length inhibits creativity, posting fewer than 100 words in an RP post is hardly helpful to other players and thus we will add a 10% warning on a character's account if a post falls below that. Non-RP posts can be any length."

On my forum I award based on word count. 100+ = Para RP'er 500+ = Multi-Para RP'er 750+ = Expert Para RP'er 1000+ = Master Para RP'er
This way people can be encouraged no matter what post length. Of course I run a multi-para RP board so a longer post is what we really are looking for. But we also understand that a post isn't always going to warrant a full 500 words, especially if two characters start conversing. It doesn't really take 500 words to answer a yes/no question. Granted you should probably add in some thoughts a few actions/reactions and then a response to make about 100-200 words. But to require a set post length isn't always a viable option and forces people to BS.

I don't think you should care about post length. Quality, not quantity, remember?

Love the suggestions! ... Keep them coming!
What I have seen, is that people, when they look at RPs, they IMMEDIATELY go to the post length to soo if it is too long or too short. I've even had people tell me before that they will only join if it has a good post length. But, it seems more people like it to just be a "give it your best shot" instead of word counts.
Thanks!

I dont care about post length much i cant see how people will count words to make sure it not below certain count. for my site i just say try to do at least a paragraph as it make writing more interesting. i can do post with 200 word or 700+ but dont want to be force either way. i just meet what im replying to mostly and found others do without having it as rule

As a minimum, I personally feel that 200 or 300 words is about right; it stops people from writing one-liners with nothing to reply to, but equally isn't going to intimidate people who perhaps can't write as much as some of the people on the site would (and means that those people who do write 1000+ word posts can have a break from that sometimes and do something quickly). But I also agree with the people who said that post lengths should be approximately matched. It's no fun writing something extremely in depth to get less than 200 words back.

I don't think you should care about post length. Quality, not quantity, remember? Actually its quantity AND quality we're looking for. The amount of description is part of the quality. And the more description obviously the more words you'll have. So the two go hand in hand.

If the option is available, when deciding to join an role playing forum I check the quality of the most recent role plays. I find that very short (e.g. 200 word) RPs aren't very entertaining and often not well written, so I tend to look for boards where the word count starts at 350.

I will use one of my rules for this.
My first site didn't had a word count and sometimes we had people doing 200-300 word posts and then gettig one-liner replies which are hard to work with sometimes. So then on my other sites I used word counts of 100-200.
I later joined a site that didn't had one and I had to leave. There were good roleplayers that were giving their best in replies but there were others that didn't seem to even bother. Sometimes I worked on a post for some time and the got a quick lazy looking reply that didn't even cover 50 words (mine was over 500).
So now when looking at sites I tend to look at the quality of the posts.
I think it really is up to you in the end. I would say start with a small word count maybe 100-200 (I've seen sites with word limits of 1000 and those are scary and most of them don't seem to survive for long) and see how that works for you. As you get members you can even ask them.
