Personally, I think that the staff should try other monetizing options before resorting to pushing a 300-pixel-tall box onto users who don't pay for ad free. I know that there's a new gift system, and there are improvements that can be made to encourage the purchase of ad free. Try more subtle ways of monetization before resorting to forcing any kind of advertisements that have good a potential to annoy a lot of users.

Supposedly you can go to the Gravity sight and choose Opt out. Umm yeah about that. Apparently NOT!

If I am understanding how it works, if you never click on anything in that section, they won't track you anyway.

I have seen that you can get rid of this humongous nuisance if you pay for ad free. Hello? That makes this new feature sound more like a money making project. I admit I have no idea how much it cost to run this site. I know that I have had the Google ads on my site for years and sometimes I click on them and sometimes I don't. I suppose that wasn't lucrative enough and now this is a means for more revenue. I may be wrong here, but I seem to remember a while ago somebody (probably Pat) saying that ProBoards actually loses money on many forums that purchase Ad-Free. The ProBoards operation is rather large, and no doubt expensive (what with server costs, office costs, staff costs etc), and while I can't say I'm a massive fan of the box in question, I barely notice it - I only catch it if I scroll down further than I intended. If it's going to help keep the service free, I'm not going to complain, because it really isn't that intrusive. =/

If so, why is Proboards "forcing" any and all EU based admins to go ad-free to meet the EU regulations on cookies? That doesn't make much sense does it?

ProBoards aren't responsible for the cookies being set, their third party partners (Gravity, Rubicon Project, other ad networks) are and you should go pester them about this. If this is such a huge problem, where are all the threads in the Support board asking why EU-based forum admins have been chased up about the cookie law?

I find moving the shoutbox to the top helps quite a bit in that regard as far as the related topics and stories go.

"Let ‘Er Rip! Al Roker ‘Pooped In My Pants’ Remix"
Not too sure how that's related to this topic, it must be related somehow though since the box at the bottom of the page says so.

Let me start by saying I don't have a problem with ads. Ads are a fact of life. And I don't have a problem with Related Topics & Stories as they pertain to my site. But the 'Stories from around the web' are not Ads, they are news feeds and forcing them to be displayed is inappropriate.
It's not about if they are intrusive or not, it's about what is politically correct and appropriate in what we the administrators force our membership to see. What news I want to see, or have my members see, is different than what ads I'm bombarded with whether they be on the web, TV, billboards or wherever.
When there is news I feel is inappropriate to me, due to a slew of possible personal reasons, I turn the channel. Here we have no choice, and worse we force it upon our members RIGHT BESIDE the more appropriate 'More topics from this board' section.
And it may go beyond personal taste, it may be offensive based on what is considered appropriate news. News IS NOT all the same! That's why Fox, CNN and all the rest are so different and have a very specific followship... they ALL have their own slants on perception, which is personal to each person. This is completely different than a vendor or salesman trying to sell you a product through an ad.
What news, if any, we administrators want to force upon our members should be our decision 1) to do it or not and 2) decide what news we want to feed based on us knowing our membership. This forced news feed is wrong and totally inappropriate. I openly accept the ads on top and at the bottom, but forced news feeds is over the top.
I believe the 'Stories from around the web' section in 'Related Topics & Stories' should be optional even on free boards.
And bringing more traffic to my board should be my call, not mandated.

I have a lot of younger teens on my board, and I feel that some of the news may be totally inappropriate for them to see on a gaming forum! This should be optional!

It's kinda weird, I didn't even think it was considered an ad at all. To be completely honest, I think it's lame you gotta pay to remove it. It's god awful huge, and it's tucked right under quick reply. It's even worse if you disable quick reply like my forum, I gotta search for the reply button every time I make a post. It makes everything cluttered, even worse than v5 already is. Not to mention, Some of the stories I've seen so far are bound to offend people. I'm offended and feel stupid just from reading some of the headlines, it's EXTREMELY pointless garbage. I'm starting to wonder why proboards just didn't add talking ads or something, if you want to annoy us might as well go all the way. Just my opinion.
