I've just had a member post this message on our board: Is anyone else having problems refreshing a page when in a thread? If I use the 'new' button off the main board it takes me to where I left off in the thread, no problem. But if I stay on that thread and use either F5 or the browser refresh icon it keeps taking me back to that post where I came into the thread. In the meantime the number of posts grows and I have to make my way further and further down the page to get to the new unread posts.
Any chance the old 'link to post' button from the old forum could be put back and would this solve the problem?

Hi, britannia. Link to post works the same in both versions. The page loads and jumps directly to the post, even on refresh. The "new" button next to a thread will always link to the last unread post.

That doesn't seem to be happening Brian. When I select the Link to Post from the tool icon I get a window with two options, but it's unclear what you have to do. On the old version (which our member is talking about) there was actually a link in the bottom right hand of the window. Sorry if I'm being a bit dumb here

They're URLs. You copy them into your address bar to paste elsewhere. That's the point of the link to post feature: Providing you with a link to the post so you can share it.

Okay, I understand that, but can you help with the problem my member is having in the opening post?

I just tested this out on a 4.5 forum myself.
The functionality is indeed the same.
In 4.5 the new icons linked to the following URL: http://<forum>.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=gotonewpost&board=<board>&thread=<thread_id> This then redirects to: http://<forum>.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=<board>&thread=<thread_id>&page=<last_seen_page>#<newest_unread_post_id>
In v5, the new icons link to: http://<forum>.proboards.com/threads/recent/<thread_id> This redirects to: http://<forum>.proboards.com/thread/<thread_id>?scrollTo=<newest_unread_post_id>&page=1
4.5 uses the browsers built in functionality for #, which basically means it will jump straight to the element that has a matching ID. As such, if you refresh the page, it will always jump back to the same point.
The same thing is true in v5, except we manually trigger that jump to try and make it more precise. You may have noticed in 4.5 if a thread has a lot of images, after the page has jumped you may not end up in the correct place as the loading images shifted things.
Either way, the functionality is exactly the same except v5 does it more precisely. The only thing I can think of is if the members browser was doing something incorrect, and was actually refreshing the gotonewpost action page, rather than the end result.

Refreshing a thread retains all the parameters in the URL. So if it says ?page=2&scrollTo=57890 or whatever in your browser's address bar, it's going to scroll to the same post every time you refresh.
