Derek‽
Most schools usually don't punish students for harmless pranks. They are accustomed to them. In fact, I'm sure they expect them. They've been going on for decades. They're a right of passage.
But, if the prank has "overtones" that may not be seen as harmless, like many of us believe this one does, that's when one is more likely to try to cover their tracks because those are the pranks most likely to suffer consequences.
As far as the speed trap analogy ~ everyone slows down because they don't want to get caught committing a crime. It matters not if it might involve another charge, such as drugs. We all slow down because it's our nature to do so.
And so it is with a school prank. If you're covering your tracks, it's most likely because you know the prank is going too far and there will be consequences.
Granted, it's been a long time since I committed a school prank. But when we did, we enjoyed letting it be known who carried it off. There was pride in the notoriety. But our pranks were harmless and never ended up with law enforcement getting involved. It's a matter of common sense and knowing how far one can go before they "push the limit" of tolerance and acceptance.
