Forum URL: midgetcarpanorama.proboards.comMy group has been hacked by four 'new' members and I have problems in
(a) trying to change my password
(b) trying to remove the so-called new members.
What has happened has really destroyed the format of the group MIDGET CAR PANORAMA after years of hard-work.
Thank you, John Hyam.

Hi When you say you have been hacked, what is giving you that impression? What problem are you encountering when trying to change your password, and likewise, when you try to delete the members.

Hi When you say you have been hacked, what is giving you that impression? What problem are you encountering when trying to change your password, and likewise, when you try to delete the members. It has been a hard day trying to sort things out. I do not feel there is any need for me to change my password. But I am being bedevilled by a person who is also a member of another forum where I am also a member. He has crashed Midget Car Panorama and set up memberships under various names - but names that are well known on another forum. At the moment he is using EIGHT names on Midget Car Panorama which are also names or very near to being the same name of members of the other site. I have crosschecked with most of these people and they have confirmed that they have not made any application to be members of Midget Car Panorama. As I see it, a simple solution would be if there was a facility to APPROVE any new member applications before they make a message post on Midget Car Panorama. At the moment it is possible for a person to find the Midget Car Panorama forum and join and make message posts with no vetting procedure. Is there such a facility that I can use - I cannot seem to find a method. Thank you for any help you can give me.

If you want to change your registration so that you have to approve members before they can be a part of the forum navigate to Settings > Forum Settings > Login & Registration and turn on the Restrict Registration option. Anyone who joins from that point forward will need to have their account approved by you before they can post.

I have followed the guidelines. Now it's a case of "sit back and see what happens." Again, thank you.

I do apologise for returning but I have one last query: now that I have followed the restriction guide, what course of action does it now take in regard to members and potential new members wishing to access my forum? Thank you very much again for all your help.

when someone registers, they will see a message that their account is pending staff approval.
On your end, you can view a list of pending registrations in the admin panel along with their credentials (username, email, etc). You can then choose to approve or deny them. I also believe you will get a bubble notification above the admin panel menu option when there are new registrations to approve but I am not 100% certain of that.

speedstox12, I just registered an account on your forum so you can see how it works. Notifications for pending members show up in the bubble on the "profile" menu link at the top of your forum. Additionally when you go to the admin panel, you should see a notice of pending registrations. There you'll see their IP, email, and can 'view' any message they wrote you during the registration process. You then choose to accept, reject, or ban. (Please don't hit the ban for me, even in jest). Unless you accept the new member they will not be able to post/create a thread, assuming you set the board permissions correctly. Do you have any more questions regarding this? Side note: I noticed you are over your limit for available forum storage. You should either delete some unused attachments and/or encourage image hosting/linking to your site. If you had a higher storage plan, it has expired and should be renewed, or risk losing those items that are over the limit.

I saw the member application and accepted this. Regarding attachments - I think this is because many of the bogus members who infiltrated the forum also Posted images. I am going through my Members Panel to delete all these Posters and this will also take down their images. I hope this will solve that problems as well. Thank you for your assistance. A batch of nine bogus members joined the group within the past 24 hours and they also posted images that were designed to make the forum look stupid IMO. Regards, speedstox12 aka John Hyam.

I don't think deleting the bogus members, by itself, will remove their posts. You'll have to do a "clean-up" or manually delete their posts/attachments. Good luck!

I deleted all the bogus members as such, and also all their messages. Then I did a cross check in regard to their images and also deleted these. I think that cleared them out as none have been back since to post any messages/comments. I also have member applications RESTRICTED and at the moment there are five names under pending - they all look suspicious as they are variations on very smiler names that appear on a another forum. It must be utter frustration for the bogus members who I have deleted along with their images. Who ever it was/they are must have spent (now wasted) a lot of time in enrolling these member names, making posts under these names, and often also filing photos/images. I know that cannot see it but it is a source of comfort to me to have revoked all their efforts in something that originally caused me a lot of distress until I was given sound advice on this thread. In all, I have four Proboard websites dealing with various aspects of motor sport. All have been improved now by the RESTRICTION on new members having to wait in PENDING.

As suggested I have deleted all the images that were posted by 'hack' members of Midget Car Panorama but I still see the warning message from Proboards that I have exceeded my image allowance. To further reduce and reach the correct allowance, should I now delete all recent images? And how will I know that my allowance is in compliance with the Proboards allocation? May I add that all the helpful advice I have so far been given as been top class. Full marks to everyone who has responded - I am very grateful for all the advice given to me.

Hello.
You can navigate to Admin > Settings > Manage Attachments - this will list all of the attachments in use with a link tho the post they are used in. You can use this area to delete attachments. If you're unsure if it is a legitimate attachment or not, I'd recommend going to the post and seeing what the attachment is before deleting. This same area will also give you statistics for your attachment space at the top.

You might want to take a look at the Post Quarantine plug-in, as well. This plug-in will allow you to place a newly approved member under quarantine, making their first post (or all posts made while the quarantine is in effect) visible only to approved staff. That way, if one of your problem posters manages to get through your defenses, you'll still be able to catch them and eliminate them before they can disrupt your forum. The Post Quarantine plug-in can be found here.

I assume that Proboards will eventually eliminate Posts outside my quota - which is fair enough? I assume that what they will eliminate will be the most recent attachments that I have Posted?
