One bit of experience/advice I'd like to share is when you have an RP forum that lets others sites advertise one your site, and you use the "first link / link back" system is to double check sites you have advertised on.
About once a month, I will go through a random set of sites that have advertised on my site in the "link back" section to make sure my ad is up to date. Well I have discovered, many times, especially if my ad is advertising a very similarly themed site, my ad will have mysteriously disappeared. So I will usually add my ad back and if it happens again I will ask the site admin about it and many have admitted they have taken it down because they didn't want the "competition". So I will end up taking down their ad on my site. Others have made excuses and after I put my ad back up it usually stayed up. All of them seemed genuinely surprised I took the time to double check.
Also, today I had someone place ad in my "first link" section and when I tried to return to their site to put up my ad, their site was in "maintenance mode" and has been all day. I have noticed this ad showing up on a few other sites as well. It makes me wonder if this is some type of tactic to discourage others sites from placing their ads. Either way I have made a note to check again in 24 hours and if they are still in "maintenance mode" I will have to consider removing their ad.
