I'm not exactly happy about badges, but I'll survive.

Is there a way to disable the "gift" functionality? We don't want to use the badge system and the "give gift" option is confusing for the purposes of our forum.

If your forum is currently running ad-free you have the option to disable the Gift tab of the profile page in Upgrades > Ad-Free > Settings in the admin area. Ideally this sort of question should be asked in the Support Board as this thread is for things specifically related to discussion of the announcement and v6.

Sorry to post in the wrong area. This was the area where I found badges and gift options discussed in more detail. Feel free to move or delete as necessary.

I am so excited for Version 6 I may go on a hunger strike until it's ready to launch! (hey I could lose a few lbs anyways).
I can't wait to design my first totally responsive theme !

About V6 and themes... Is it a given that all V5 themes will be unable to make the transition to V6? Between my two forums, I have 22 themes, all created by myself and by another admin. A lot of work went into those themes. Both my forums also use plugins and template modifications. Some of our themes were created on V4 and I had trouble enough making them look good on V5.
I would like to have an idea of what I'll be facing: how much work will be involved, how much time will I have, etc.? This is actually becoming quite stressful. The transition from V4 to V5 cost us a couple of members because the new version just wasn't displaying properly on their computer.

You will have 18 months at the least to adjust your v5 themes to v6, without breaking the v5 layouts, if that helps reassure you at all.
ProBoards knows that the transition from 4.5 > 5 was very messy, so they're taking steps to ensure that it won't happen that way, such as including documentation so that people aren't left wondering what does what (note this hasn't happened yet, just something they said would happen).
No one can quite say how much work will be involved to change things since nothing is finalised yet, but I do not think it will be quite as drastic as 4/4.5 > 5. There will still be plugins and templates and such, rather than starting entirely over with a 100% different system like the previous version change.
I don't think you need to worry just yet about the transition. If you look at the trello board we still have quite some time to go -- plus we haven't even had an announced alpha test, much less a beta test so it's definitely not an immediately impending sort of thing.

Thank you. I am reassured... to a point. I'm pretty sure that some of our most important plugins won't make the transition and I haven't seen their creators around for ages, which basically means I will be on my own trying to somehow replace them. Which is why I'm thinking ahead

Thank you. I am reassured... to a point. I'm pretty sure that some of our most important plugins won't make the transition and I haven't seen their creators around for ages, which basically means I will be on my own trying to somehow replace them. Which is why I'm thinking ahead :) Depending on the plugin it may no longer be required to be a plugin, too, so keep that in mind. And I know in several other threads loads of active plugin and theme makers have said they're willing to put in the time and effort to help folks convert. Overall i think we will be in a better position than with v5s transition, those who have the technical knowhow to help will be in a more informed position to do so this time around, with a longer time period to do so, and with less drastic method changes than the 4 > 5 conversion so I am pretty optimistic it won't be like last time. Your mileage may vary of course.

To add to what Kami said above - your plugins will also run as is for those 18 months. Plugins may even be taken up by other coders if the original author is no longer around, to make them V6 compatible. Again, though, as Kami said - there's not even an alpha test out yet, so those 18 months haven't even started yet (the 18 months starts, I believe, when V6 actually goes live).

Thank you both Now I really am reassured. My two main concerns are the "Add image to post" plugin, which is used by pretty much all my members on both my forums. And "Different On/Off Icons for Different Boards" which gives a sensational look to one of my forums (I don't use it on the other). I'd hate to lose the rest, as well as my template mods, but the two I mentioned are simply essential for me. I was all set to learn HTML and CSS in time for V6. Well, I may still decide to take the plunge, but at least the clock has stopped ticking. Thanks again!

See the above two posts. Click the link for "trello" int he first post, which shows you what has been done/completed and what is remaining. There are 8 phases total on the "trello". Most have been done, it's almost there. Green on the cards mean done, no green = not done.
