Do you go? Do you have fun? Jim and I go every year. There's free food and a chance to win gift cards up to $500, plus it's really our only time to dress up every year. We usually only stay a couple of hours because after that everyone gets drunk, loud, and dances, none of which we do. I never understand the women who come to office parties wearing slutty dresses, or those who get falling down drunk. Yeah, I know they're off the clock, but everyone's going to be talking about it the next work day, and not in a good way. Here's us from last night:

Very nice picture of you two! My company stopped having offsite parties in an effort to not be liable legally for the actions you mentioned. Most departments do have an onsite food celebration. Manager buys fried chicken, everyone brings a dish or buys the plates, silverware, etc., I do not think I will participate again this year. My out of check contributions next year means I wll be bringing home less next year even after our raises.

My out of check contributions next year means I wll be bringing home less next year even after our raises. Considering we have 800+ employees, an on-site party is not feasible. The company does provide taxi service options for those who can't drive afterwards. Our department usually also has a separate party at the house of one of the staff in Radiology, and it is much more fun. We do a white elephant exchange which is usually hilarious. When you say your "out of check contributions" are you talking about voluntary contributions, such as an increase in 401k, or did your health insurance go up? My husband and I raised our contributions to our 403b plan so that we max out. Luckily, our insurance remained the same this year.

Do you go? Do you have fun? When I was in field service, each region of our company would have a semi-annual meeting. The winter meeting was conveniently in mid-December. They'd fly us in, along with our wives, on Thursday evening. While we had our meeting on Friday, the wives of the local employees would take the out-of-town wives on a shopping trip. The company picked up the tab for lunch but the shopping always took a bite out of my wallet. (How many pairs of shoes does one woman need!) Friday night, we'd all dine at a five-star restaurant then drink and dance until the wee hours. Shuttled back to the hotel, we'd sleep it off then fly home on Saturday. Yeah, it was great fun. A night of elegance and also a chance to celebrate with good friends and colleagues we saw infrequently. For the most part, everyone found the right balance between dignity and cutting loose. But there always seemed to be someone who gave us a 'memorable' moment. I'd tell you more but what happens at the office party ...

wildmaven , for ProBoards we just had our office "party" on Friday. This year we had a dinner at Lucille's (great food, generous portions). We also do a secret santa for those that wish to participate. (Using the Elfster site which makes it easy.) It was a lot of fun. So far none of the staff here has shown up to our gatherings in slutty dresses, but I have encountered this in the past and like you, never understood why. There is an etiquette regarding proper attire. Dressing inappropriately can be embarrassing and awkward not only for the individual but for others. One should dress suitable for the occasion. Although if your holiday party has a ceiling-to-floor pole and a buffet, then perhaps slutty dresses would be acceptable. Pearson , when I worked for the university there were policies regarding alcohol at functions, and I assume it was for liability reasons. Depending on the event attendees could buy their own, but work would never cover the cost.

I have a coworker who hosts a HUGE family Hanukkah/Christmas party every year and they have such a big problem with gift giving. I'm passing that link on to her! LOLOL! Just a basketball net at either end and a scoreboard. Wait...that scoreboard... Hmmm.... We did have a buffet, though! We had a rule last night about no one bringing in outside alcohol because of last year when a lot of people brought in personal flasks.

I apoligize for not filling in appropriately wildmaven, My company has around 165,000 employees around the globe. The more money coming out of check is for our contribution towards healthcare, I also switched at enrollment time to an HSA plan to lower out of pocket expenses. From reading news articles, other expenses under the PP&ACA will kick in, and I may take home less again in 2020. I am 58, and if I cannot save more in 401k, then It will be harder to retire. Being a global company, we have been told that if one person objects to a Christmas display in the office, it must come down. Kind of takes the rosiness out of the season at work. Retread, Lucky you sir, sounds as if good times could be had during the holidays, without TOO much risk! Scott, I understand what you are saying with regard to liability, my company has stopped many offsite functios, unless you are an elite/in the club!

I completely understand. I'm 54 and my husband is 65. The future is mega scary if you're not actively working toward your retirement. Back to the topic at hand, I am really liking what they did this year. They hired a photo company to take photos of us which printed out a photo booth style strip of 3 photos, and they emailed our photos to us so we can print them bigger ourselves, all for no cost to any of the employees!

We're a small group (about 12 people) that just goes out to lunch once a year the week before Christmas. There's no alcohol because we return to work afterward, and company policy requires absolutely no inebriation during work hours. Unless a food fight were to break out at the restaurant, I don't think there's a very high threat of debauchery. Note to self: Finalize fork-catapult prototypes before next week

I work for the NHS so it’s not as though we can have one paid for since it’s publicly funded, but someone usually organises a Christmas do every year. This year I’m on a shift for it so I can’t go, but not sure if I would anyway. I do enjoy them, but the price keeps creeping up. Generally we pay for an organised Christmas do with a 3 course meal and entertainment, and when you add on the cost of drinks it can get expensive. It’s usually fun, but because of the price and the fact that a lot of people are busy around Christmas, fewer and fewer people seem to be going each year. I think it’d be a lot more popular if they just picked a restaurant and had a normal meal rather than the big Christmas parties.
And yes, I do usually drink at these things. It’s a good laugh, and since we all know each other well anyway and know each other’s embarrassing stories, no one really cares much about what’s said when we’re back at work.

I went as a teenager to the grocery store party, but that's so I didn't have to work. I am an office of one now, have been for many years. I don't get Christmas parties.

I have no idea if we're having one or not and we're all talking about it and would love to have one especially me but, there is likely not going to be one but, then again I could be wrong.
It is a new store and sales are through the roof it would be nice if we had one.

We're having a White Elephant exchange at my boss' house next week. I went to the thrift store and found a couple things to put in the package, one of which is a device that turns a watermelon into a keg and the other is a "decorative" item: potatoes made out of foam and panty hose. White Elephant exchanges are always hilarious if people really embrace the quirkiness of it and don't bring a wine basket. "A white elephant gift exchange, Yankee swap or Dirty Santa is a party game where amusing, impractical gifts are exchanged during festivities. Usually, the goal of a white elephant gift exchange is to entertain party-goers rather than to gain a genuinely valuable or highly sought-after item." -wikipedia
