Question ---if time travel was possible and you got sent accidentally back in time to say... medieval times...and you fell in deeply love with someone from that time would you give up 21st century luxuries and your family and friends to stay with your beloved, would you come back alone and give up love or would you try to talk your beloved into coming back to this time with you?
I'm reading this series of time travel books now, so this is why the question popped into my head -I started pondering what I would do.
There seems to be (at least to this author) a lot of rules to this time travel stuff about not disturbing the fabric of time *sigh* The author actually tries to be logical and scientific about this stuff. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

It would definitely need to be an accident for me to end up in medieval times. Do. Not. Want. If I couldn't talk her into coming forward in time, I'd leave love in the rearview mirror. Going back in time to November 5, 1955 might be fun for a while but one needs to be careful, ya know. June 27, 1912 might be a different story. I'd probably want to stay.

Ahhh, 1955 a "Back to the Future" reference👍 And YES this would be a totally involuntary 'back to the future' event.

Time travel is a mind bender. If you went back in time, wouldn't time already know you did that?

I don't know, the author didn't tackle that issue -and here I thought she thought of it all...*carp, now I'm getting a headache trying to puzzle your question out* Hmmm...no I don't think you would 'remember' going back in time because you hadn't done it yet

But if you didn't meet you, maybe you wouldn't. ... or something like that. 🤔 Let's make this a tad easier, there is only one of you at any point in time. You will not encounter yourself at any point in time Although I have to admit the author did encounter a sort of similar issue with a 600-year-old ghost, someone going back in time to kill her killer and the problem she had in remembering him when she came forward alive and not a ghost -now THAT was a fascinating book!

LOL, what I was trying to say, but did so poorly, was wouldn't time itself know that you were going back already, so going back wouldn't screw up the timeline, because you going back was part of the timeline. Ah, that puts an entirely different spin on things. Looking back, you did say that but I didn't read it correctly. It seems like there could be some temporal paradoxes which could occur if you changed events. Let's say if you went back in time and kidnapped childhood Adolph and his mother and left them on a deserted but inhabitable island. (I'm trying to be benevolent here.) That certainly would have changed the course of history. But how would the younger (later in history) you know that was something you should do, since he wouldn't have had an effect on the new history?

For me, the question is moot. Wouldn't fall in love with someone back in time; Marian's waiting here for my return.
That said, if I went back in time, I wouldn't want to go there to live; rather, I'd go there merely to observe, like a time-travelling voyeur, almost a Prime Directive situation (for all my fellow Star Trek fans!). My degree is in History and just watching would be fun, interesting, enlightening (to find out how much of what we learn is actually what transpired), and personally rewarding.
And then, back to Marian!

what if going back in time creates a whole new timeline, rather than you still existing on the current one? that would explain why going back and changing something would create a whole new future: something that wouldn't make sense in the 'current' timeline because you've already seen the future in it. get what i'm saying?

And that is something the author tries very hard to tackle, the fact that you create a whole new future. I think she tackled it in a very interesting way.
