I belong to a group on Goodreads where we post our accomplishments - It's a Reading Challenge group. I have promised to try to read 400 books this year it is only possible because I do read several short books/novellas and I do do a lot of re-reading so I can sometimes skim. There are several members of Challenge Group (Over 200 books this year) who say they are reading 4 or more books a day. I could understand if these where children's books (and yes they count) but they are not -these are either self-help books or just average length novels. I have heard of speed readers (anyone remembers Harriet Klausner from Amazon reviewers *chuckle*) but 4 or more 350-page books a day? Do you think that these speed readers can really grasp what a book is all about when they read this fast? Spreadsheet help-- this is Google Docs --- what can I do to have a continuous scroll instead of having to have several different pages? How can I stop my borders from disappearing when I put something in that cell (?)I have to keep editing every time I add to the Author column. Is there a way to make my color choices for each column permanent (to the document)? Dianne's 2019 Challenge

I signed up for Kindle Unlimited mid-November and have read 65 books so far. I can see someone reading a couple a day if that's all they did, but 4 a day seems like these people have no life outside of literature. That, or they simply skim looking for the "juicy" parts of the novel.

Kindle Unlimited is pretty good, with it I never feel guilty about not finishing a book - plus e-books are getting so darned expensive (for me anyway).

Once I start reading, I can generally get into the groove. If I'm not interrupted, two books is pretty easy. If they live alone or have nothing else to do, four is possible while still comprehending. But I would be surprised on average if many people could do this.

Scroll right to the bottom, you should see a 'add (number) more rows, be aware that more rows may take a lot longer to load.

I doubt very much that a person reading four or more books in a single day really comprehends what they’re reading. Not unless they’ve crushed a bottle of Adderall into a fine powder, mixed it into a solution and plugged that bad boy right into their brain stem. It’s simply been proven that speed reading lowers comprehension significantly, and that’s only going to be further hampered by switching gears so rapidly when moving from book to book. Even if they do manage at least average levels of comprehension, they most certainly aren’t retaining what they’ve read. Without retention, what’s the point?
Reading without comprehension is pointless, and comprehension without retention is worthless.
These people are just trying to pad their numbers, but they aren’t getting anything of value out of the experience. It’s no different than someone who says they’ve seen every episode of a prestige TV series in a bid to keep up with everyone else, but all they did was keep it playing on Netflix in the background while they did housework or played on their phones. They know Character X was shot, but they don’t know the intricate motivations as to why, because they barely paid attention.

They know Character X was shot, but they don’t know the intricate motivations as to why, because they barely paid attention. If you are a member of Goodreads I would give you the link to one of the readers. I tried to engage them in conversation to see if they would tell me how they could read so fast -they simply told me that they took a book with them everywhere and read every time they had a moment. And herein lies my problem - just like you said, the faster I read the less I retain. The only problem is, is that now my brain seems to be just in the habit of reading fast. No matter what I do I can't seem to slow my reading down. On the other hand- it sure allows me to enjoy my re-reading so much. Nowadays everything has become a sort of competition - and what seems to make it worse is that Kindle books come with an 'average time read' and no matter how fast I go I can't keep up with it. I just need to learn to slow my reading down more, so I enjoy it more. The fact that I gave up most of my reviewing has helped me a bit with that.

I know that with Excel you can have a smooth continuous scroll but I kept screwing Excel up for some reason. The + adds another sheet. The "Add" next to the number of rows adds more rows. The "Add" button will appear at the very bottom of your spreadsheet, however many you might have - the default will be 1000th row. If it's not there yet - keep scrolling, it will always be at the very bottom. There's another way to add rows, but it's more complicated. If interested, the instructions can be found here: support.google.com/docs/answer/54813?co=GENIE.Platform%3DDesktop&hl=enI hope that's of any help.

I mysteriously lost my ability to speed-read after I finished high school. Now it takes me about an hour to read 30-35 pages, and it's lame. That means about 10 hours just to finish a normal-length novel. This is why I only the find time to get through like five books a year anymore.

Here is the real problem which I didn't explain fully: (here goes)---I can scroll down that sheet pretty much as infinitum. However, if I try to add another book to line 25 and save it - I get nothing. I am unable to post anything past line 24 on the spreadsheet. This is why I keep adding pages.
