I have a question that's been bothering me. I've seen it on a few threads, but I'm curious. Can you roleplay in pms? I wouldn't do that, but I want to prevent members if they want, if it's against the rules.

Hi There is no rule specifically stating you can not roleplay through PMs. That is, as long as the content - as with all content on the forum - does not violate the Terms of Service and community guidelines.

Ah, thank you. Oh totally, perhaps it's better to not. Don't need to have that chance.

Isn't this a bit like "if a tree falls and there's no one to hear it, does it make a noise?" PMs are just that, private between two or few people. They are never meant to be public, not even on a private section of a forum. With that in mind, how can they cause offence or be viewed by minors?

The ToS covers the entire forum, and since PM's are a part of the forum - they are covered under the ToS as well. Therefore, PM's must also abide by the PG-13 rule.

I do understand that, but don't understand why. Maybe if you had a member who had lied about their age? Even so, if an adult corresponded with them, they couldn't know. That said, that's true of any forum member, posting and reading.

Role play doesn't automatically break the ToS. Note that even if you prohibit role play via PM, you cannot monitor the content of their messages. I think it might be constructive to make your members aware of the ToS, specifically what I'm listing below, and then allow them to interact freely. It may seem long, but it's an easy read. Of course it doesn't, but if it was to be pg-13, there would be no reason to take it to PM, would there? It would go on the open forum. See my reasoning? If there's nothing to hide, why are you hiding it?

At the end of the day, it’s about good faith. All content must be PG13, but content in PMs cannot be reasonably expected to be moderated by forum staff since they have no access. That said, they also cannot encourage or approve — explicitly or implicitly — any violation of the TOS. If members decide to break it via PM, as long as the admin / staff aren’t found to have encouraged it, PB will deal with the violating members themselves.
As far as to why, it’s in part because of PBs business arrangement with its ad partners. They require them to abide by their content policy so ads can display on PB which extends to all aspects of the forum which includes PMs. The other part is simply because it’s a clause in the TOS — there are a variety of reasons (people lie about their age as you mentioned, which is one of them, and also if adults engage in racy content with minors who are over 13 that is still illegal, etc), which if enumerated people would seek to exploit and thus it saves a lot of headache for everyone if there was simply a content rating requirement.

"PMs are just that, private between two or few people."
Should mention that PM stands for personal message, not private message. PM's can be forwarded to other members and their content can also be copied and pasted elsewhere. There is nothing that can guarantee that PM's will remain private among the participants.

I deleted my message because I referenced an older version of the ToS, and I needed to revise my message, but was heading out of the house and didn't have the time yesterday.

I role play in pms all the time. Though many of my characters are snappy and moody by nature. But in pms mode-- Watch out!
*looks at the above replies*
Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! That's what you meant.
There are a few valid reason why some people may want to pole play via PMs. Many times it can be to work out a post that needs collaboration before addressing in the public. The back and forth nature of PMs can often bring a spontaneity that doesn't always work well in threads and it also offers a back and forth between two characters that might be in a thread with multiple people and hard to have an easy back and forth conversation without posting out of order.
It's also a good exercise on developing character quickly and helping to hone out a few things.
