When was the last time you tried something new? I'm of the belief that learning something new keeps the mind sharp, so as I get older I've been trying things more and more. Right now, I'm attempting needle felting, where you use a barbed needle to add wool fibers to a fabric. This is my first attempt and I have 6 hours into it so far. I drew a desert scene on a piece of felt (about 2 feet wide) for my design. How about you? What have you tried recently? Was it a new game, a new craft, learn a new language?

When was the last time you tried something new? Seriously though, doing new things is awesome. The last major-league new thing I tried was about twenty years ago, fronting a band as a lead singer. I played guitar (or drums) on stage for years. But I never sang in public. The first night, my knees were all wobbly and I was terrified. After that I still got an adrenaline rush but became increasingly comfortable. I still look for new was to explore and find outlets for creativity. Most recently, Becca and I are collaborating on creating some new themes for ProBoards. I've never tried that before. Your needle felting looks interesting. But please confine your work to fabric. Note to Jim: If Marian sneaks up behind you with her needle and wool fibers ... RUN!!!

But I never sang in public. The first night, my knees were all wobbly and I was terrified. After that I still got an adrenaline rush but became increasingly comfortable. I tried Karaoke once. Never again. Kudos to you for continuing to sing! I've done a couple, but just basic stuff. I get frustrated quickly. Ha! He has enough fluff on his body as it is!!!!

I have been working on learning Icelandic. Slow and steady because it's a hard and dying language.

I have been working on learning Icelandic. Slow and steady because it's a hard and dying language. Just because, or for a concrete reason like traveling there? Iceland is gorgeous.

English is an official 2nd language in Malta so not everyone there even speaks it. If you showed up in Malta speaking Maltese as an American locals would be very impressed! We met a Brit who lived there who learned a bit of the language, but stopped bothering when everyone spoke to him in English anyway. My new thing lately has been D&D. Kinda got dragged into it and didn’t think it’d be something I enjoyed, but it’s actually been really good fun.

The people in Zejtun pride themselves on sticking with Maltese and using English only when pushed to do so. We did find that when we used our limited Maltese, we made them chuckle. Then they would switch to English and save us from embarrassing ourselves further. If you are on the north side of Malta(Valletta, Sliema, St. Julian's, Floriana etc.) English was all they spoke. We are moving back there in July for another year so, we are brushing up again.

I have a hard time with people who laugh/chuckle/snicker at those who are trying to learn their language. We let it slide simply because they would switch to English for us which really helped. Several of them told us that they were impressed that we were trying to learn since Maltese is one of the hardest languages to learn. For the most part, they were kind. However, there are those in every country who have no patience for foreigners, Malta is no different.

Wildmaven: I have always wanted a "less known" language in my skillset. And I'd love to visit Iceland. It was originally a 2019 plan, but I'm not sure now when it might happen. But I'm trying. Bugme: There's only about 330,000ish people that speak Icelandic.

: D FTFY

Bugme: There's only about 330,000ish people that speak Icelandic. You win, I looked it up and there are 522,000 people worldwide who speak Maltese. 370,000 are on Malta
