Now the nursing home my mother is in is threatening to go out on strike - what's going to happen to all the patients in there and who will become a scab enough to cross a picket line to care for the elderly. Will they be skilled? I'm so sick of this.

Absolutely not.
For all working people to receive fair pay and treatment, it's imperative that we show solidarity to one another and support each other when on strike. Crossing a picket line simply shows an employer that they can continue to mistreat their employees, hire scab workers, and fire striking workers and not suffer any real harm. By boycotting companies whose workers are striking, we help support the workers who are endeavouring to receive fair pay/etc. by having their back and causing some financial harm to the business. There's always somewhere else I can go to get my messages or whatever, and by supporting strikes I am not involved in I also strengthen my position if I need to strike myself, as I know that others will back me up the same.
I understand it's difficult when strikes are on, especially when they involve vital services that people need, but strikes are a method of last resort when other negotiating tactics have failed. It's a threat that's designed to bring round a resolution as quickly as possible. In the case of healthcare, during the junior doctor's strike here in the UK a few years ago, the striking workers agreed some system of skeleton work to make sure that patients had at least a minimum of care (healthcare workers care about their patients!), but also had enough leverage to cause disruption to the daily operation of their hospitals, without which there would be no point in striking.

I didn't cross the line. Which was a pain in the butt cause it meant I had to go to a competitor (Shaw's) instead on Easter weekend. But my wife and father are both union, so camaraderie and all that.
It paid off tho for the workers; the strike ended yesterday.

The one thing I do have is an endless supply of food stores so if there's a picket line at one I will go to another, I am not one for drama and will avoid it if possible.

I work in retail and live about 5 to 10 minutes within 3 different stores it is amusing seeing stores taking little shots at each other every now and then my store I work in literally had tags saying things are 5c cheaper than this store.

The strike has ended.
I prefer staying out of the drama. I have no problem shopping elsewhere.

I work in retail and live about 5 to 10 minutes within 3 different stores it is amusing seeing stores taking little shots at each other every now and then my store I work in literally had tags saying things are 5c cheaper than this store. I am surrounded by retail here and they all compete with one another.
When I was in the clothing industry for retail it was hilarious, one job I had was when I was working in Boutique Of Leathers which was adjacent from Leather Ranch in Guildford Mall shopping center, they'd come over to compare prices all the time when we had sales and unfortunately for them we got to know who was working there so well we figured out they were paying people to come lurk about in our store. lol
They never said much if anything about us except that we were scams because they couldn't figure out how our products were the same as theirs yet better priced and better reviews from the customers themselves.
Where I'm at now where most of what we sell is bulk and better priced is not looking good for the grocery stores around us and we do get some customers that think it's gross that we sell bulk, when I asked why it's so gross she said the germs and bacteria is horrendous and I reassured her that if someone vomits or even sneezes in the barrel we throw the whole barrel away even if someone cross contaminate and the company loses out on money but, all we can do is remove the surface of those who reach in with their hands.
It's the same in all stores who sell bulk in Canada, it's not a cheap industry I'm sure.
Can't please all of them but, most of them just don't care and buy crap loads jelly beans to poppy seeds by the barrel. Now that is something no other grocery store does not have and I'm sure that doesn't make them happy but, then again it's not like their losing much money either.
