(another) 3 Days of Peace, Love, and Music An event to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Woodstock Music & Art Fair is scheduled for August 16–18, 2019 in Watkins Glen, NY. Scheduled to perform are Jay-Z, The Killers, Imagine Dragons, Halsey, Miley Cyrus, Robert Plant, The Raconteurs, Cage the Elephant and Janelle Monáe. Also scheduled are bands and artist who performed at the event in 1969: Dead & Company (featuring three members of the Grateful Dead), Santana, David Crosby, Melanie, John Sebastian, John Fogerty, Hot Tuna, Canned Heat and Country Joe McDonald. But at the moment there seem to be some real concerns over finances and legal matters. www.rollingstone.com/music/music-news/woodstock-dentsu-festival-835699Does the thought of a 50th anniversary celebration seem appealing to you or is it just ... blah, blah, blah, bunch of dirty hippies, who cares? Did Woodstock '94 (Mudstock) and Woodstock '99 create such a bad impression that this one will be stillborn, regardless of whether or not the financial/legal issues are resolved?

I think the biggest problem is that people believe it has to be both nostalgic and money-making. While they can coincide, they don't have to. Yes, you want to make money, but you don't HAVE to do it with huge bands. Get some local bands to perform and save costs. Work with artists that want to be there for the "feel" of the event and the history behind the original rather than the paycheck.

Woodstock was one of those once in a lifetime events that I don't think can be recaptured, as times have changed. It's not the same culture of society now as was then.

Woodstock was one of those once in a lifetime events that I don't think can be recaptured, as times have changed. It's not the same culture of society now as was then. At the very least, I think it would have to happen after the original people and bands are long dead. Maybe for the 100th anniversary or something. Iconic might not mean the same thing to everyone.

...who is this even for?
The people interested in the modern performers weren’t even alive in 1969 and know of Woodstock only from historical reputation painted by nostalgia. The people who attended the original Woodstock are probably beyond the shenanigans of music festivals these days (they might not think they are, but I’m sure they’ll change their minds not long after they arrive). In fact, take the original attendees back in time to the original Woodstock and they’ll likely realize a bunch of unwashed, drug-addled hippies aren’t as fun to be around as they had remembered. That’s not a judgment about anyone, it’s just that carefree kids have a different worldview and tolerances than what are now senior citizens (haha, y’all so old).
Nostalgia is a powerful thing that hides the truth, and it can never be recreated. Constant attempts at doing so just make this fact all the more obvious.

lol Graham, you read my mind. I don't think the mix of ages this is targeting is necessarily a problem. I went to a Doobie Brothers concert at Pine Knob about 15 years ago and the teenagers (even those wearing metal band t-shirts) were digging it. The current bands featured aren't ideal for an older audience but except for Jay-Z and Miley, I'd be okay with it. I kinda like the Killers and Janelle Monáe. Were it up to me, I would have had a few current acts that lean more toward the folk-rock or even new-country.

Okay so you believe in magic so that's not it. Maybe the reason you don't remember him is because you hate cats?

I don't think that trying to recreate Woodstock or even coming close to it can work. The country doesn't have the same mindset for it, modern bands aren't going to give off the same vibe. I mean back then the message was peace, love your fellow man, free love(sex)and the "hell no we won't go" mindset- what is the mindset nowadays? And what would people do? Walk around taking selfies? Plus Miley Cyrus??? Are you s******g me? What, is she trying to take Janis Joplin place???
