Have any of you used Airbnb? I've used them three times now and I was well impressed. The three apartments we rented were in France. One in Bayeux, one in Bordeaux and one in Rouen. Very nice. Very clean, modern and comfortable! Communication was excellent too. I wouldn't hesitate to book through them again.
Any experiences?

I never have and I don’t think I ever will. The idea of staying in someone’s apartment/home like that doesn’t appeal to me.

I haven't, and I won't if I can ever avoid it. Airbnb and other short-term holiday letting services drive up rents and remove housing from people who live and work in a city. It's become a real problem where I live (Edinburgh) to the point where the government are bringing in legislation to curb the number of such lets available.

I haven't. I'm not really fond of the idea of not knowing what the place is like, whether the owners will be there or not, whether it'll be clean or not, whether there will be hidden cameras, etc. With hotels at least you usually have a company to go to for disputes. I don't trust AirBnB in that regard.
That, plus I'm not a fan of how it's impacted rent for locals. Also, I wouldn't be a fan of neighbors around me constantly having different short-term tenants. I'm progressive in some things, but sort of conservative in this area. I don't think local homes should be used commercially like that unless there is a sign put up out front and they're paying commercial taxes and such.

I would have to agree with some of the others here, an Airbnb holds zero attraction to me for all the above reasons and more. I like brand name hotels because I know what I'm getting. Not so with an Airbnb.

I've stayed in Airbnbs multiple times over the years and have never had an issue. All of my rentals were in the Northeastern U.S., though, so I don't have experience using it for international travel (yet!?).

After reading articles about how many of them have hidden cameras, no thanks.

I've used it plenty of times. Sometimes it was a private room, but other times it was a whole place. Two friends and I took a summer vacation and got a cabin through AirBNB and it was really nice. It's really provided a lot of extra choice when it comes to where to stay, and tends to be pretty affordable. I'm not without my concerns but overall I've liked it a lot.

I have used them at times. Some of the best ones are in major tourist areas. The one I stayed at in New Orleans was fantastic. Clean, good neighborhood, not expensive, and the owner invited us to a crawfish boil and left cookies every morning as he was a baker.
I had another great experience in Detroit one year.
Seattle this March was outstanding. Great neighborhood, clean, affordable, close to areas of interest.
My most recent one was okay, but it was still nice and affordable.
As for the cameras, they are supposed to be identified if they have them and where. I know a couple of lawsuits currently going on regarding them, but since I don't run around naked (in these or hotel rooms), I don't really worry about it. It's usually just a place to sleep for me.
On the apartment thing, three of the ones I stayed in were just AirBnB apartments. It was just an apartment that someone would ONLY rent out to guests. No one stayed in it permanently. That made it feel more hotel-like overall. The one in Detroit was a young lady's apartment. It felt a little weird at first when she was showing me around, but then she left for the week to stay with a friend. I wasn't there a ton, so it wasn't super awkward. It was a little weird seeing her closet full of dresses and nowhere to hang my stuff, but other than that, it was hard to tell overall.
I try to use them, especially in tourist areas, because they are usually cheaper and more reminiscent of the flavor of the area I'm staying.

After reading articles about how many of them have hidden cameras, no thanks. Really? I've never experienced anything like that. However, any hotel, B&B, guest house, apartment, or Inn, could have hidden cameras installed. We'll never know. I suppose we make our choices and take a chance...like anything in life!

The prospect of hidden cameras is the only aspect that appeals to me. 😘

I have used AirBnb serviceseveral times, no bad experiences yet. AirBnb made my last European vacation much better than it could have been: it offered much nicer accommodation than many other hotel booking sites we looked at, and was often less expensive. Out AirBnb residence in Edinburgh was incredible and half the cost of a hostel or hotel room, and was in a great location.

I mean yeah, if strangers were coming into my home I'd want cameras put in in case someone stole something though I would hope they werent in the bathroom.
