This is the Alaurentia community forum: alaurentia.boards.netIt gets a few visits, but I feel no one is sticking around. I am starting to wonder if the visual theme is wrong? I really want it to have a dark theme, and one that is classic. But maybe something about it is wrong? What are your opinions.

It looks OK, no doubt about that. The graphic in the header could do with stretching so that it doesn't repeat at the edges. That looks a bit ugly. I like the colour scheme.
Nice touch making it bilingual.
The problem I have with it is that I'm not sure what it's supposed to be. A role play in a utopian world? A discussion about how things should be (and aren't)? Having been prompted to take a look, I gave it a bit more time than I would if I just happened across it, but I didn't see anything that made me want to hang around. I had a look at the rules, and the Start/Commencez category, but I was still in the dark.

I had a look at the forum, and am also confused as to the overall theme of this place. Colour scheme is OK, but could have been a little more exciting. It looks a little too gloom&doom for me. Regarding the forum being bilingual. If you want to use 2 different languages, then you should have a section of the forum that is only in English and another section that is only in French, otherwise it won't work. Say, for example, a French member makes a post in French. How many people will actually understand what they were saying and reply? And reply in which language? It will only work if you keep both languages separate, so that the French-speaking members can talk to each other, and the English-speaking members can talk to each other. Anyway, good luck with the forum.

kevinjs I wasn't aware that the header is repeating in larger browsers, thank you for catching that! You make some very good points, indeed! Thank you, this alone is extremely helpful. @valla Hmm, so it looks gloomy eh. I will have to fix that. I really want a dark theme, like dark Reddit or dark Twitter, but I can't in the world figure out the key points why their themes work and mine doesn't. Good points about the bilingual thing. Thanks.

I really want a dark theme, like dark Reddit or dark Twitter, but I can't in the world figure out the key points why their themes work and mine doesn't. Good points about the bilingual thing. Thanks. My personal preference is for dark text on light background but I think you've done a nice enough job of light on dark. The 'white' isn't true white. I think you've used #dddddd there? And the background appears to be #2a2a2a. That, rather than a true black seems a good choice. The splash of color on the title bars breaks things up nicely.
Other things you might consider ... - The #55ccff (light blue) you're using for the links is okay. You might try something from the gold family or some hue of green, if you're in the mood to experiment. - I think forums posts tend look a bit scant when they're spread across the full with of a wide screen. To condense things and prevent the need for the eye to scan across the full width of the page when reading the posts, you might try adding something like this to the bottom of your Style Sheet. Admin Home> Themes> Advanced Styles & CSS> Style Sheet tab. #wrapper {max-width:900px;} You can experiment with the 900 to get the width where you like it best. A width of 1,280px or less, will also prevent the banner image from repeating on the left and right. ;)
- The true black #000000 background you're using outside the wrapper makes the stuff inside the wrapper stand out nicely. But you could add some contrast in a different way. You could try using a texture for the background. Something like www.transparenttextures.com/patterns/soft-wallpaper.png from www.transparenttextures.com/ might look very nice on top of your true black background. And it would add a touch of visual interest without stealing too much focus from the forum content. You can download a texture to your computer, then in Admin Home> Themes> Advanced Styles & CSS> Visual Editor tab, you can upload the texture in the section: Background, Background Image. You'll see an upload icon to the right of the dropdown for the stock background images. Click that and you can upload an image from your computer.
- Managing two languages on the same forum might be a bit tricky. Google Translate isn't always accurate but at least it's close most of the time. I'm using this in the Global Header of my forum so it shows on all pages. Of course you'll want to to change the message from the one I'm using and probably add your own styling. <style> .translate-box { font-size:10px;
border-style: solid; border-width: 1px; border-color: #000000; border-radius: 5px; padding:5px; text-align:left; margin-bottom: 7px; } .translate-box > div { float: left; } </style> <div class="translate-box ui-helper-clearfix"> <div id="google_translate_element"></div> <div style="margin-left:10px;">The Google Translate function has been provided as a courtesy/convenience.<br/>However, we respectfully insist that all posts be made in English.</div> </div> <script type="text/javascript"> function googleTranslateElementInit() { new google.translate.TranslateElement({pageLanguage: 'en', layout: google.translate.TranslateElement.InlineLayout.SIMPLE, multilanguagePage: true}, 'google_translate_element'); } </script><script type="text/javascript" src="//translate.google.com/translate_a/element.js?cb=googleTranslateElementInit"></script>

@retreated Whoa, thanks! I'll implement a few of your tips, indeed, I most sincerely appreciate.
