One of my friends lost his job because he told a supervisor he couldn't stay past the time he leaves on most days.
The person who fired him has a reputation for mistreating people and was suspended for it.
I've never heard of anyone getting fired for something like this until a few days ago.

Was he putting in a full 8 hours or part time? In most cases you would call hr about this sort of situation. Sadly most supervisors think they have the role of God when it comes to management.

Because he wasn't fired for any wrongdoing, he can definitely apply for and collect unemployment benefits.
Things like this happen all the time. I have a friend who works in retail. Today, he is scheduled to work from 4pm-12am. Tomorrow, he's supposed to start at 9am. I keep asking myself how he's supposed to sleep and function on a schedule that rotates from nights to mornings like that. I'm sure that if he were to complain, he'd get suspended and then replaced.

He put in 8 hours. Like I say in that situation it's hard to keep a calm mind I get that after doing retail night stock for nearly the oast 4 years supervisors get on your nerves. At that point he should have called a human resource representative to talk to them about it. If he hasn't moved onto another job and wants the job back that's really all he can do. Just have to remember everyone has a boss they have to answer to. Even directors.

Some contracts say that you should be ok to work after hours on request (unless you have good reason not to occasionally), it's all about the contract he agreed to. Like in my last job, i was requred to take my turn on call, but this could easily have been working every other saturday, or working after hours on occasion. Generally an employee is supposed to have 8 hours sleep or at least away from the job don't forget travel time and time for breakfast. The problem is if it is in their contract to do those hours and he's agreed to it

Unfortunately there seems to be way too much of this sort of thing happening. Jobs are hard to come by, and managers know it so they feel like they can get away with treating workers like garbage.
Hopefully your friend can find a better job with a supervisor that respects workers. Personally I wouldn't bother with HR, the supervisor could easily just find other ways to make your friends life miserable for getting him/her in trouble.
Like others said thought, taking action could be tricky if there was a contract of some sort.

But if said supervisor is getting a lot of complaints and is a known issue then that supervisor becomes a problem for the company due to there being a high turn around. My old assistant got demoted from manager because he was writing too many people up, they quit he got demoted. So yes HR is there to also help workers or replace them.

I would look into HR, the Labor Board, or review the contract. If the state is an at-will state, it won't matter because you can be fired at any time for any reason, even without documentation. There may be nothing he can do but move on.

Was he fired even after he worked his contract hours? If he's worked his contract hours, they have no reason to fire him. Most employees will try it on...getting you to work overtime, above and beyond your contract. I used to work for Sainsbury's. I was contracted to work 15 hours a week. However, the pressure to work one or two evenings extra was immense.
