A distraction in my opinion. Another piece of technology designed to supposedly 'make things easier' for the motorist, instead of allowing them to make their own 'common sense' decisions based on experience and knowledge.
Whilst the motorist is concentrating on the screen at the back of that truck, deciding whether to overtake or not, what's happening behind them? Or directly to the side of them? I notice you can't see the front of your own car on the screen. Someone could easily walk out from the grass verge...animal or human...and you could miss them. Besides, that car is far too close to the truck in my opinion. If the truck should need to brake suddenly...not much stopping distance there.

Totally agree that it's a distraction, you're staring at the screen, but not really taking in stuff immediately around you, there's also the false perspective, you get so engrossed in the view that you begin to think there's not even a truck in front of you, made worse when you are too close, much like the gaming chairs with the screen where you believe you are in the scene.
Also, think of the cost of installing these on all trucks, plus the maintenance
Nothing replaces good driving and experience, i've driven for over 40 years, and while it's good to see through the windows of the vehicle in front, at least you're not looking at the road from the perspective of the truck.

*Nods* You can't even see the truck if you're concentrating on the screen at the back of it! Another distraction in my opinion

I swear I saw this after my post immediately above. I didn't read your whole post. Great minds think alike! ...or fools seldom differ *grins*

A distraction, I don't drive but I know you need to keep eyes on the road and what is in front of you, you can't do that if you are staring at a screen or this case the back of the lorry. It takes the judgment and responsibility off you and that can't be a fully good thing.

Maybe we are not drivers, because we have too much common sense! We can spot risks before anyone else can Søren.......*grins*

Hey Patrick [ASE]While I do see a high potential for distraction, I also see a huge benefit that others seem to be overlooking. When you're behind a truck, you can't see what's in the same lane, just ahead of the truck. There might be a huge gap between the other cars and trucks or there might be one or two cars just ahead of the truck with no room for you to merge between them if you attempt to pass the truck. You really don't know until you pull into the next lane over, what the situation is, immediately ahead of the truck. This system would give you crucial information. Would that benefit outweigh the distraction? Uncertain. But it shouldn't be summarily dismissed.

Exactly Soren! Boys will be boys though. If they cannot debate a subject in a mature manner, they will ridicule us! We girls must stick together though. We must ignore the crass comments, and put them down to male insecurities. I have been a passenger to a driver for 35 years...hubby! He is not always right! Sometimes common sense prevails...although I have to add...he has never had a speeding ticket or parking ticket

Out here in the desert, we have a ton of roads like that shown in the first post and there is a high number of fatalities. I usually tend to hang back behind the truck, put on some music, and just chill, but there are many who couldn't care less about lives and pass trucks with an upcoming blind curve ahead. Some of the truck drivers are kind and pull a little to the side so you can see better, but many don't. It'll be interesting to see how these screens work in the real world.

A good idea in theory, but too expensive to deploy and maintain on a large scale. No trucking company would shell out the cash to install this on their fleet.
