I can't imagine life without drive-thru's. I use them for everything including bank transactions and to pick up prescriptions...there is just one problem though. I recently went to pull into my Dr.'s new building not realizing that I would have to pass the hurdle of Starbucks's drive thru which was built so the cars would block the DR.'s office parking lot and back up onto a very busy street. *sigh*

It would just help if cities responded to development a little more realistically. Yes, you want to drive traffic to busy areas and commercial areas want the ability to serve needs via drive thrus. However, there has to be some common sense approaches to development and so many communities don't think about the ramifications. Too many communities think all development is good development and that is just categorically untrue. On a separate note, they have drive thru margaritas and daiquiri places in Louisiana.

It's the nanny state. We know what is best for everyone. God forbid that we'd just let businesses and consumers make their own decisions. Pretty soon there will be bans on plastic straws, unhealthy food in school, banning Little Debbies and Twinkies, dressing kids like football players to ride a bike and having a biblical conviction involving morals... Oh wait, that is already happening. My bad.

Banning drive-thrus would have a serious impact on a couple of the wedding chapels in Las Vegas! Heaven forbid!

The desire to ban drive-thrus, stated in one of the links made me laugh. The reasoning is borderline absurd. They want to save the planet by conserving a few drops of fuel and preventing a few micrograms of carbon from being released to the atmosphere by the cars idling while waiting in line. What they don't consider is that modern vehicles shut themselves off while stopped and restart when you take your foot off the break. So how much is actually being saved? And of course, since more people will be entering and exiting the establishment if there is no drive-thru, there will be energy lost by heat escaping during the winter (and entering during the summer) creating greater demands on the heating and cooling systems. I reckon that will offset any savings which might have been gained by not having cars idling. Cities and suburbs which are experiencing rapid growth don't always exercise due diligence in the planning phase of development. Starbucks and other businesses have been around long enough to know what kind of traffic impact their businesses will have but they aren't financially motivated to care enough to spend additional money on routing their traffic on their own property in such a way that it won't impede traffic on the thoroughfare or neighboring business. They only take this into consideration if a planning commission requires them to do so. Creating a traffic issue could even be good advertising, in a subliminal way. If passers-by see constant lines, they might subconsciously think: Wow, they're doing quite a lot of business. They must have something good. Bottom line: A modest amount of planning can prevent traffic flow issues from ever being a concern.

It seems a little extreme to me, drive thrus have their uses. I don't see how banning drive thrus is going to make anything healthier. People are still going to use their cars for other things.
Want to improve traffic and decrease pollution? A better option would be to invest in a decent public transport system. This would take more cars off the road and make things safer, which i'm assuming is what they are tying to do. Like anything else though it is something people need to decide for themselves.....you can't force people to change.
I'm not American though so I don't really know what the situation is like, this is just my two cents.
