Lately I've been trying to land a job as a VA I love the idea of working at home. I was curious if anyone here has had any experience working from home? I hope companies will see my 4 years of retail experience would be good experience to get me in the door.

I've worked from home for the past 7 years (though also worked retail at the same time to compliment quieter periods). Finally ditching retail after 17 years.

I would love to work from home. 30+ years in healthcare has burned me out. I did a rough calculation and I've done nuclear scans on over 39,000 patients. *blinks*

I have an office but I'm able to work at home when my physical presence isn't required, which is around 90% of the time. I'd say it's a mixed bag - I love not having to commute in rush hour and for the most part being able to set my own work hours but spending my relaxation time in the same place I deal with work can be annoying. I am part of a fairly big team and work on a lot of projects that physically bring me into contact with people so I haven't experienced this directly, but a lot of people I know who are independent freelancers do end up missing having work mates and that kind of contact day-in day-out.

Highlighting those points as they are both pertinent. Working from home can be superb, but I would strongly recommend having a 'work' area that is totally separate from your relaxation/recreation areas, so the two don't bleed through. It can also get lonely, however a number of companies/offices offer hot-desking places and towns will have co-working groups which I have used before and is superb for the sense of community and collaboration. I'm lucky that my new job will mean having a permanent office space but the flexibility to work from home if necessary/i can't be bothered to make the commute (it's only 15 mins to the office, but in winter the weather can make roads around here problematic).

I personally have tried this, and I have NEVER had any luck without having to pay something up front, and not be able to get started.
