I think I'd need to see an example of how it's being overused. Like I can talk about how "general" is a good word to use because of its ubiquity and how it's been used for years to mean pretty much the same thing all over message board and websites and that it gets the point across, but I'm not sure if that's the problem you're talking about.

I like the word "general." As a general rule, I refrain from using general in discussions unless, of course, I am discussing the general rather than the particular. I endeavor to general my thoughts and words so that the general population of the forum enjoys them, that they don't cause a general discontent to the members of the group, and I hope that it is generally true for the members here in General Talk.
Then again, it must be remembered that I AM the Commanding General of the Squirrel Army of ProBoards General Talk.
Just saying!

We generally don't take the use of general that seriously, unless you're a general in the army then you generally should take generals more seriously.

Hi guys! I wanted to express my thoughts, feelings, and opinions about designers over-using the word, "General". In all of my critiques, I highly encourage people to change that. On a support forum such as this, I understand. Proboards gives us so much freedom with naming items like boards, categories, and threads. It just breaks my heart when I see someone that has a really cool website and the first part is at the bottom and the word, "general" is everywhere. Why does everyone like to use that word? I am genuinely curious about it because I see it everywhere and I would like to know if others feel the same way I do when it comes to that word. Please share your thoughts, feelings, and opinions about this word. I would very much like to know. I never mean to offend anyone with words. I am genuinely trying to see what others feel and think about this word. As a designer, it just breaks my heart, and I want to help people. However, I still see, "general" everywhere. I wanted to discuss this topic for a long time There is nothing wrong with over-using the word "general" on a web-site since the synonyms are awkward, as you can plainly see. Critiques/reviewers on the other hand, should not over-use words. And professional reviewers should be above the simple emotions and not want to change someone else's work. genยทerยทal /หjen(ษ)rษl/ Learn to pronounce adjective adjective: general 1.

Generally, the only thing that annoys me is when people say "literally" when they mean a figurative concept.
Did you literally wrap your head around my pet peeve? If so, I'd like to see how you could literally wrap your head around anything.

If so, I'd like to see how you could literally wrap your head around anything. I am literally uninterested in immature and unprofessional responses. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hi, ๐ Dianne ๐ I understand where you are coming from. Though, I never once stated that I wanted to change someone's work. If I had, I would have been really angry that no one was taking my ideas after I spent the time and energy to give constructive feedback. I am not angry, upset, or anything like that. If I were, then this topic would be called something entirely different. This post was designed to discuss a word. This was not meant to be a protest or anything like that. I am above emotion, but I am also a passionate human being. So when I state items like this: "It just breaks my heart when I see someone that has a really cool website and the first part is at the bottom and the word, "general" is everywhere." I never once said it was wrong to use the word, "general". I know what it means and how it is used. I always advise to stray away from the word. I never said it was wrong. I know how that can appear. What I am asking is why do people love that word so much? Why put a board called, "General Discussion" in the "General" category? It looks very redundant on the screen and not so creative. That's why I wanted to ask and brainstorm. In every critique that I have done, I have always put at the bottom: "I'm not saying that you have to implement my ideas in any way. I am just giving some honest feedback. I hope you liked the feedback and I wish you all the success in the world!" I am seriously just asking why people like to use that word all the time. I want to see what other people think. --------------------------------------------- Why is it when someone wants to ask a question here, that the other person sometimes gets degraded and shot down? I've seen it on other posts and it's demeaning. I'm not saying that everyone acts like this because that would be assuming and I have seen professional responses as well. Last Few Notes: I am NOT picking on anyone who uses this word. I have never said it was wrong to use. I advise to stray away from it, but that is all. We're supposed to be a constructive, supportive team to help others learn the ways of design. Team work makes the dream work. Please do not be disrespectful, pretentious, demeaning, or anything but professional with these replies. Thank you User 180565, Kay, and Knightly Celt for giving your honest, constructive opinions.

That being the case, I predict you'll also be uninterested in this:
Back on-topic: That's quite off-putting. Although you paid a compliment with the "really cool website", the "breaks my heart" is unnecessarily negative. I reckon your suggestion would be better received if you described the use of General rather than something more stylish and creative, as being a missed opportunity.

Hey Retread, please read some of my critiques. I never once put, "breaks my heart" in my critiques in the board about opinions. My critiques are always constructive. If I put that in there, then it would be an opinion not a critique. This is just me expressing my opinion. This was the only post where I put: "breaks my heart". The lighten up Francis did not bother me at all. I thought it was entertaining. It was not demeaning at all.

If it doesn't upset you, frustrate you, or anger you yet, you pretty much are judging peoples boards by stating what you state in your title and your post.
It's like someone going to your board and finding something they don't like about it then coming here or somewhere else and "discussing" what they don't like about it.
You just don't do that, everyone has a right to their opinions fine sure I get it and so does everyone else but, when it comes to vocalizing it in another board because it "Breaks Your Heart" as you stated twice in your post doesn't mean people are not going to voice their onion on how you voice yours, they have a right to "their" opinion about your post as well. Think of it as a "Touche"!
Take it with a grain of salt!
You voiced your opinion, now hear them out!

@riversa, you posted this in GENERAL TALK, not Open for Discussion. You'll have to stop being so rude.

@linette I was trying to tag her. I hovered my mouse over the username to find the info to tag her. I guess it was wrong.
That whole post wasn't just for her.
No one is understanding how I talk and what I am trying to do here, but it's okay. *FACEPALM* whatever.
What's done is done. I wish everyone good luck and I am moving on. *FACEPALM* whatever.

The only thing more heart-breaking than the overuse of โgeneralโ is the overuse of โdesignsโ. So uNpRoFeSsIoNaL.
