Wow indeed: I'm sorry but if someone breaks into your house, even if they don't stab you, I personally believe you have the right to do whatever you want. Whatever you want? I think not. According to that statement, if someone breaks into your house to steal your TV and you catch them in the act, you have right to tie them up, torture them by cutting off their fingers, removing their eyes, knee-cap them, and toss them in the street. ... if you want to. Blanket statements like that don't work and destroy the credibility of the person making them.

www.cbc.ca/news/canada/manitoba/vincent-bunn-dakota-pratt-sentencing-1.5165442Apparently Bunn was actually killed on the deck outside the home after attempting to flee, after having already been stabbed a dozen times. I think most prosecutors would challenge whether or not that qualified as defense (er, outside of Texas, at least; then again, knives don’t make them stand at attention quite like guns do). It’s reasonable to question whether Bunn still posed a threat to Pratt at that point or if Pratt acted out of anger and revenge. With that said, I don’t have any sympathy for someone who enters another person’s home and tries to stab them in the head while they sleep. Whether or not Pratt took it too far in response is hard to determine when you consider how much adrenaline must have been running through his system and how much that effect would be amplified by the “significant” blood loss. I don’t know the judge’s reasoning, but I wouldn’t have sentenced Pratt to any further jail time (based solely on what was released by the media). Time served plus five years probation sounds fitting. Would-be murderer got murdered, started something he couldn’t finish. News at 11.

Hide and hope they don't find you, while they take off with your valuables, and if you have a dog. Child. Well RIP. What are you going to do? Call the cops and they'll be there in 60 minutes and the person is already gone and probably already sold your stuff! You should have EVERY right to defend your own home. Shotgun, pistol, sword, knife, whatever it takes to protect your family and valuables.

What are you going to do? Call the cops and they'll be there in 60 minutes and the person is already gone and probably already sold your stuff! You should have EVERY right to defend your own home. Shotgun, pistol, sword, knife, whatever it takes to protect your family and valuables. - I don't currently have a dog, but the dogs I've previously owned would have woken the neighborhood and scared away any would-be intruder before they ever breached the door. Or if they were that set upon entering, they've probably killed the dog before I could even react. Then I'd know what I was up against.
- The typical police response time where I live is less than ten minutes. I can confirm this from personal experience. But even if it were hours rather than minutes, I'd still grab my cell and call 911 as a first step. If if a homicide becomes necessary, my home would become a crime scene so I wouldn't be allowed to remain there until it was processed. Get that started asap.
- I believe I have every right to defend the people in my home and would absolutely do so with the minimum means necessary. If that minimum meant putting a round through the person who invaded my home, so be it.
- Valuables? Pffft. That's what insurance is for. I'd much rather file an insurance claim than live the rest of my life knowing I took someone else's unless it was necessary for the protection of my family or myself. YMMV.
- A knife or sword is essentially useless if the person invading your home has a firearm.
Only a fool brings a knife to a gunfight.

1. Some old lady had 2 big guard dogs in my home town, 2 rots (so couldn't have insurance) the 3 guys who broke in shot and killed the dogs and stole her TV. Grandchilds ps3, knocked her and her husband out. 2. Cops arrived 45 minutes later after a neighbor called about gun shots right away.... A knife or a sword would definitely be sufficient if you know how to use/disarm (used in both instances)

Better to be knocked out than gunned down. And if they resorted to killing a person, they'd probably kill anyone else in the house they saw rather than leave witnesses to the murder. JMO.

The fact that people are still surprised by the concept of 'reasonable force', even on this thread shows where we are as a society.

In think in regards to this particular case what probably tipped the scales unfavorably was: At trial, the Crown told the jury there had been "bad feelings" between the two men ... and jealously surrounding a relationship. and The Crown asserted that Bunn was welcome in the house where the attack occurred, based on testimony by Pratt's mother-in-law, who owned the home. Of course we weren't in the court to know how all this was presented, but I figure as a juror I might wonder how much was self-defense vs the 'bad feelings'. He had a right to self-defense. But at what point is too much - if the perp is subdued and is no longer a threat? There definitely was no issue of it being self-defense in this case: sanfrancisco.cbslocal.com/2019/11/25/he-picked-the-wrong-house-powerlifting-82-year-old-grandma-takes-down-home-intruder/

Well, hiding was inevitable when they were in the living room watching TV mid day, and minding their own business in a "safe" neighborhood.

Okay, so let me chime in and add my two cents.
If someone breaks into my home and it is my perception that he/she intends to do harm to me or mine, I WILL defend us in the most expeditious way possible. I will grab my pistol, use it first as a deterrent then, if that doesn't dissuade the perpetrator, I will fire at center mass until I no longer perceive them to be a threat. Period.
As far as I am concerned, he/she abrogated any consideration the moment our threshold was illegally crossed and we were endangered.
I would rather be judged by 12 than carried by six.
