OK, so I'm trying hard to eat less carbs and less sugar. But I am confused about the sugar on the labels.
Sometimes I see that it says this many grams of sugar and then below that it says includes blah amount of sugar.
So is the includes blah amount of sugar part included in the original number listed?
I tried to google it but I am not making much sense from what I am reading.

Here’s a list of the most common aliases for sugar: sucrose dextrose fructose maltose lactose glucose high-fructose corn syrup brown rice syrup maltodextrin molasses evaporated cane juice cane juice fruit-juice concentrate corn sweetener corn syrup palm syrup molasses Here is a more comprehensive list: mindfulketo.com/sugar-aliases/Are you looking for just low carb/low sugar help, keto (putting your body into what is called ketosis,) or is this for a medical condition?

I knew some of the stuff on that list, but dang that is massive. I never realized that molasses is a sugar. I'm just trying to figure out how much sugar is in foods because I need to eat less sugar and carbs since I have diabetes. But the whole sugar thing is confusing me when it shows how much sugar is in something and then below it on some labels it says blah blah amount of sugar added.

Try to keep it single digits? I’ve been watching my carbs too and I try to keep within a range of less than 25 a meal

I've been trying hard and everything I still eat has carbs in it. Even the fruits and Vegetables I eat. I usually try to aim for stuff below 25.

I like a lot of fruit pudding and pasta. So it’s hard to do low carb.

I like a lot of fruit pudding and pasta. So it’s hard to do low carb. Yeah pasta and potatoes were my biggest carb weaknesses. But I am doing a lot better on not eating so much. I used to make sure I had pasta or potatoes or rice on my plate with a vegetable and some sort of meat. Not anymore. I allow myself to eat a bit of pasta once a week or every two weeks. Depending on my mood. Before I started eating less carbs I would make the whole box of pasta and eat pasta everyday for over a week. That was blah so I only cook a serving size of pasta now. I found a new pudding thing I like from The Cheesecake Factory and it is so high in carbs and sugar. But I refuse to give it up completely. So I do treat myself from time to time. Just like with the German potato salad and the Spätzle which both have high carbs, but it's a family meal we had since I was a little kid so I don't want to give it up. So I will have to eat like way less than I did in the past. Do you eat less carbs for health reasons? (You don't have to answer if you don't want to.)

I love cheese, I could live on cheese. I love avocados, but they are a bit pricey. I do try to get them sometimes. And seafood is way too much for me. So I don't get that often either. I definitely would if it didn't cost so much. I am saving that link so I can make a better list of food I can eat. Thanks for helping.

Since 2015 August, over 50 lbs. for me, but I will never coach someone to do what I do as diet. I quit smoking inn 2000, but I try so hard not to judge others for anything...

To answer the original question: yes, the added sugars are already included in the total sugar value. This line simply tells you how much of the total sugars are derived from additives. It’s a new value that wasn’t present on labels until fairly recently (a year or so?), but will be required on all food labels in the US starting next year. For future reference, any indented line on the “Nutrition Facts” portion of a label is simply a subset of the nearest non-indented line above it and is already calculated as part of the total.
Food items presented as healthy (or healthier) can no longer hide behind natural ingredients. If you have a fruit-based snack, for example, you might not think too much of the sugar content because various fruits contain a lot of sugar and thus anything made with real fruit would also have a lot of sugar. An unavoidable outcome, right? Well, perhaps, but now you can see just how much of the sugar was added to sweeten the item and make an alternative choice for a more “honest” product.

I'm just trying to figure out how much sugar is in foods because I need to eat less sugar and carbs since I have diabetes. As someone with an inherited autoimmune disease (celiac) that is set off by gluten, I feel your pain. Your best bet in this case is to use your forum-moderating skills and find an online community for diabetics (particularly that type of diabetes that you have). I don't know if there are any good ones that exist for diabetics but I'm sure Reddit wouldn't be a bad place to start looking.
All the guides and well-intended advice in the world pales in comparison to being able to ask "hey, can I eat this?" to a group of people that have had experience dealing with the same medical condition as you.

True, but I'm not a big fan joining groups and such that have been around for a while.
