All my life I have had a belief that if you don't care what your yard looks like you can have all your weekends to yourself. So now that I have grown up a little, I am wondering: How often are you s'posed to water your lawn to keep it green?

Every morning or late evening, Kapt. Maybe a short sprinkle mid-day for about 10 minutes, though the dampness won't last as long due to heat issues.

Kapt~`'- Depending on rainfall, and heat.... If it is really dry and hot, then every couple of days. (DO not do a heavy watering) If it is not so dry or hot, then once a week. The best time to water is at dusk and dawn. Midday is horrible as alot of the water you put onto your lawn get's evaporated by the sun. Good rule of thumb, if your lawn starts to change color from green, then add a bit of water. If it looks green, then it is fine. Grass does not really die, it Hybernates. So if it is already brown, then water it every day and it will come back. (Watering schedules may be limited by local ordanaces. Such as Odd Even day's and such. Contact your local Gov't office for exact rules and such)

Kapt~`'- LMAO, you can buy these sprinkler things that shower water over your lawn at certain times.

Kapt~`'-No problemo, and it's like Marvin mentioned, it all depends on how hot it gets out as well.

Just go for some astro turf. That way it's always green. Might not feel quite right, might not match the neighbors, but you can sit on your porch drinking your favorite refreshment and smiling while they toil against some grass that will just grow back.

Or you can replace your lawn with Wood Chips. Just paint them green and you are all set.

If you open your door to see this, then you've probably watered it a bit too much:

Watering every day is WATERING TOO MUCH. What that does, is creates a very shallow root system. If there's a drought or a big heat wave, that lawn will die quickly. You should soak your lawn twice a week. Once in the morning and once in the evening if you live in a non-humid area. If you live in areas where the lawn would not dry out overnight, then water deeply in the morning. You should never water during the heat of the day or when it is windy, it just wastes water. Watering twice a week, and deeply, establishes a deeper root system and a healthier lawn.
I had a yard on Long Island, NY that was 85 feet x 475 feet. That was a lot of lawn!
