I can't recall where I heard this, but I heard if you get alot of accounts, it will lag your server badly. I read this on some site, but grr, I totally forgot.
I'd use what noop said.

Cookies blow.
Just make seperate sites for each person and don't give them the other person's URL.

ok, for the application I want to use, that method will not work,. You see, I'm trying to use this method on a boy scout website that i designed for them, parents are lready busy and don't have time to pass out individual web sites, it needs to be one site, which allows people to access their accounts. (just to tell you mor about the situation) so just to see the other side, what would it take to do it the .htacces route??

I don't know, but I sorta have an idea... Make a form yeah yeah so the members can fill out, then check to make sure everything was typed in, then it will go to page B which can make a directory called /USERNAME/ and then it can add a .htaccess file into there with a .htpasswd file stored somewhere on the system and it can write the username & pass in the .htpasswd.. Hope ya get where I'm getting here, I've been up for twenty something hours.

If you know a programming language (such as php, or perl)
Then here:
You can create a form in HTML that contains forms such as the username and password (for register page)
They click "register" and it will take them to another page, which takes that information they provided and writes it to the .htpasswd file... You can make it create a directory (username) so the script will do write this:
I'd type: username: prohibited password: 325
so when I click "register" it can create a directory called "prohibited" and can also write to a .htpasswd file "Prohibited:325"

Yes, so they could have a url such as: www.yoursite.com/Prohibited/ Also, to point out, be sure you do checking in the script to make sure the directory doesn't already exist! Else someone will be able to overwrite data / Get access to someone elses accounts.

Simply putting a .htpasswd file in a directory does not protect it.
