A word is defined partly by the context it's used in. For example, if Martyn had posted calling Pat a 'total n00b', everyone would have known it was just a joke. But if someone had just joined PB, and their first post here had been to call Pat a 'total n00b', they'd probably have found their thread was locked.

I've actually had people of African decent tell me they'd prefer to be called "Black" or a some variation of the "N" word. Personally, I feel uneasy saying it to someone. I get offended when I hear my grampa refer to someone as a "negro" or a "nope" and I'm not even black!
All my native friends hate being called native, they'd rather be called Indian.

I don't think much of racial slurs, I look at it more as a joke. Some people get offended way too easily and will make a big deal if someone says a racial slur. I joke around a lot with my (white) friends and call them n*gga. Not mocking the black race, but all the "gangstas" who do that.

And just that you know every race is "racist". If a black, a white and an asian are in a competition of course the white want the white guy to win, black want theirs and asian the same. It's not racism it's just our race. We like those who resemble us. That's why are are women vs men polls --> which is better, that's why are UK vs America polls and the list goes on.

Racism is only bad when the people do not have the same ethnic background. No. A racial SLUR is when you are using their skin colour/ethnic background/whatever as a disrespectful comment. If it isn't meant to be offensive then it isn't a slur. I don't really care what people say - racism is blown out of proportion anyway. I mean, let's face it, if I were to call someone black, they would take me to court for it. If they called me white, the courts would laugh at me and send me on my way. Racism is one sided, and so therefore I don't see anything wrong with it.

The "N" word is usually used between black gangster culture to emphasise another black gangster person, notice they never use the word for black females. Its sort of like the "F" word which i wish not to go into and is used for most things just to insult each other or to symbolise unity ("brothers" or "brethrens") but in a more harsh way. It is seen as offensive when other races use it as it is seen as a verbal attack, especially if its someone you don't know. Now if it is a member of the same race you automatically know it is not an attack to to the fact that they are the same race.
Yes, it is contradictory, but I guess thats just how it goes, all cultures and groups have thier different personalities and attitudes right?

First they were treated like animals. Now they have more rights that the others. Racism is no more. It's just competition between races. Which race should have more power? And because the caucasian men were the bad guys in history we are now the racists.

I despise racism, but, I mean, I honestly don't mind a little bit. Everybody says/thinks something racist once in a while.

Here are a few:
Black Dagos - Believed that some Sicilians are part Black.
Goombah - From the Italian word "Compare" (pronounced 'cumpa') meaning "a close friend." Considered a slur when used by non-Italians to describe an Italian male. Was first used by Louis Prima who was famous for bastardizing the Italian language in his witty songs for his American audience. The Goomba is also the weakest enemy in Nintendo's Super Mario Bros. video game series.
Guido - Northern term referring to Italians who try to portray a mafia mentality. Feminine version is Guidette.
Guinea - Pronounced "gi-nee." Came from "Guinea Negro" and originally referred to any Black or any person of mixed ancestry. This dates back to the 1740's. By the 1890s it was being applied to Italians--almost certainly because they tend to have darker skin than Anglo-Saxons/Germans. By 1911 the term began being applied to Hispanics, although the reference to Italians is the most common.

If you use an insult / derogatory expression on someone that obviously could apply to yourself, then sure, no offence should be taken. I think if it appears sufficiently tongue in cheek then it's fine. And rightly so. However, if it doesn't apply to you, it's almost certainly going to cause offence so shouldn't be used by yourself. No?
