I prefer to be the owner, or a staff members of sites I'm on. Being a member and nothing more than a number on the counter makes me go up walls. It just feels like no one cares for me, no one replies to the new person, reason when I run a site I always reply to the new person. Plus, when your staff, owner, and creator, you can do whatever you want with your board. You can put your ideas into action, make it more appealing to your eye, and also others in the progress. Whereas being a member, your ideas are no more than suggestions that staff can bypass in an instant. I think the key to a successful board is to have more than one administrator.. I disagree with that highly. I've been a solo administrator on my board for six months now, and we're still going strong. While I'm one admin out of a team of three on another board, it can get very confusing. Such as, when I join a site you have to deal with three different people, you could get to know one of the staff well, and be complete strangers with the other ones. My point is, it seems to me that only have one admin, and perhaps one mod, is easier on members, at least those that are alike to my tastes. Plus, when your that solo admin, you know exactly what's done, what's being worked on, and you can make plans without having to worry about what your equal staff member, or staff members will think you it. Being solo tends to give the admin more control over the board. In my option that.

Eh, I'd take being a member over an admin any day. I've owned waaaay to may sites to enjoy the power trip anymore. It's...more stress than it's worth, at least for me(given my administrative skills, which...leave much to be desired as I get busier and busier). It's less stressful and more enjoyable to be a member.

It really depends. If the person has more experience in being an admin for a site, or a forum, then they would most likely want to be the admin of their own forum. I agree, that some admins do not know what they are doing, and would better be off as a member on another forums. Like stated in the first post, admins usually find a template from the first graphics site they see, which is alright, considering (hopefully), they were licensed for reuse, but I feel that each and every forum should have its own personal feel.

Being solo tends to give the admin more control over the board. In my option that. I personally wouldn't care which I was. Although I do enjoy being Creator. However I find it easier with more than one admin. On all my forums I've created, I have at least three to four admins, only givin to people I trust of course. But, nothing is done without the consult of every staff (Including G-Mod and Mod alike). Everyone is equal and therefore it gets put to a vote. Now my members do have a say and I value there opinions very much and take them to heart. Does that mean I will change what I have for them, NO; not until it gets brought across the floor. Once that's done everyone can throw there own opinion in. It just seems more fare and a lot easier that way.

I prefer to be a member cause being an admin is a lot of work but on mine I'm the only one running it. My co-admin just yet again left me in the dust. Hi there. =] As per the rules of this board, please keep all replies at least four sentences long. this is to promote the continuation of the discussion, rather than just short replies that don't add anything to the topic at hand. If you have any questions, feel free to PM a moderator to ask. Thank you!

I like owning my own site but i like being a memeber to. The reason i like being an admin or staff is because you can help new people come into the site and make it a welcoming place. but i think being staff is really hard,Because you are told to get on every day and its hard when you have a life of your own. But being a memeber is really cool because you dont have to worry about helping people witch you can still help but being a member is fun.
Some things i have learned about owning a site is, Dont make to many roles on your site. let the people have some freedom and do stuff. Make the site flash and have good graphics because looking at the same colors all the time gets old. Have active members and you should be active your self because once the admin stops coming on other staff get power hungry, and start making more rule and people just leave.

I've been on both sides, and I always wind up as staff. I have some weird case of OCD and forms must "go into eachother". Design is one thing I hate being a member for, because if its not "pretty", I hate it. Forums like InterOceanDesigns and Eyeon Studio I love, and I am a member at each (and lead coder at Eyeon). I guess being a coder myself, I prefer to do things myself. As a member I get no say, as an Admin I get a lot of input and get to add / work on anything I want and do not have to wait on anyone.

Tough debate. Personally, I enjoy both. I've been an admin of many different sites and it does take a laborious amount of patients, making sure codes fit properly, creating rules, thinking up plots, making boards, and understanding everything you've created and knowing it. Because, frankly if you don't have a good grasp of certain aspects of your site, members won't either. This is usually a major down fall when it comes to being admin. Also it does help to have some co-staff members just incase, because even admins have lives of their own. With my experience of being an administrator, its fun, but at the same time debacle. Somewhat like every day life you have to deal with different types of people and be the boss of the joint. Usually in order for me to create a site I have to have this really brilliant idea and/or be inspired by something and just stick with it. Once I've got it planned out (like i said grasping your site) it usually turns out quite comely.
Now, being a member. This is also fun as well. Not as much stress, but you still have a duty of being active. I don't mind being a member, and i honestly don't have much to say on this part. I guess the main thing with being a member is try not to piss off the admins, because they have enough trouble as it is. Just follow the rules, ask questions if necessary, and just have fun.

Until this past January, I've never had a forum. It's been a little over 5 months since I created my Sony Reader Forum and I have to say that I think I'm doing a great job of making it successful. I advertise like crazy and stay active; can't say the same for my mod staff since I'm lucky to see them once a week. I love being an admin and if I knew how much I would have liked it then I would have taken the plunge way sooner. Anyway, I went for the retro look and everything was built from scratch; I also don't like premade templates . I have to admit that it's a lot of work and without dedication, you should choose member not admin. In fact I feel so good about how it's going that a few days ago I opened my 2nd forum.

I've found that I prefer admining over being a member lately. At first I preferred being a member because, like many people have mentioned, it's less work. Now, however, I have become way too picky. I like to have thinigs look a particular way, so being an admin helps with that. I also have fun creating new looks and templates. Being an admin also allows you to be proud if you keep a site going strong, because your work putting it together doesn't go to waste! At least that's what I think. (:

Being an admin is great for keeping things on track or if you want a site to look a particular way. The only downside is the slight distancing between you and the regular members. You're not fully one of the members when you have the power to delete their accounts. They tend to treat you with gloves which can be annoying at times.

I have found myself more inclined to being an admin. Don't get me wrong, I do enjoy being a member of various sites. However, I find my skills put to better use as a leader. I believe the key to being an admin is experience. The more experience an admin has, the more prolific a leader they will be. It is possible to start a site and run it with little to no knowledge, but the board will most likely be a chaotic and stressful environment for both the members and yourself. An admin cannot know just the basic mechanics; they must know how to deal with unruly members and be a 'politician of sorts.' This means making sure all of the parties are satisfied. Unless you have experienced these various situations firsthand, you will not know how to deal with them. When I first started roleplaying, I believed I was capable of running a successful site. But after three failures, I resigned myself to being just a member. But now, after four years of experience, I believe I am fully capable of creating and maintaining a successful site.
