I think all admins started off as members, me being no exception to that statement. I love being an admin. It gives me purpose, but sometimes gives me far too much to handle. What with school and all of my admin duties, I honestly don't have much time to be the best member I can be. It's harder to get up posts, because you have so much to organize, but nevertheless I think that I am pretty good at what I do as far as being a staff member. I've had a site going for about five months strong, and I don't intend to see it die. I'm determined to keep it going and active. I think that I can keep it going as well, and that my site will prosper throughout the years.
I haven't been doing this long, but I think that I'm very successful in it. I've been RPing for about a year, since November 12, 2009, and probably only admining for about seven months collectively. I'm no professional staff member and not very experienced in coding or design, but I think that if you want to make a forum, you have to do it because you want to. You have to do it because you enjoy it, and you have a wonderful idea. You have to do what you love, and love what you do. If you don't love your forum or just do it out of boredom because you have nothing better to do, then it won't work out. You have to put your heart into it for it to be successful. And you can't give up, no matter what.
As far as the amount of admins and such that is recommended, I see no problem with any amount. I only have one other staff member on my site, my co-admin Sharky, but I don't enjoy having a million staff members. Especially when there's a small amount of members. It's just easier to consult with a few people, a few people that you know you can trust with your site. I don't make people staff unless I know them. I hate asking random people to be staff members, because it's just unsafe in general. I also hate admins who think that they're better than everyone else, and admins who hate to answer questions from new members. I think that admins should be understanding, kind, and listen to their members but not give into every request. They have to be strong.

I make a good leader and general marketer, but I'm bad at skins and coding. So I need like, three or 4 people to even start.

What a great, helpful topic!
Well, I am the 15-year old Head Administrator of a brand-new video game clan forums.
I like to think of myself as a heckuva dedicated Admin, as I get on at least twice a day for several hours (while I am working on the computer anyway, I may stay on for three or four hours). I constantly post topics and welcome new members.
I think my forum is pretty successful considering it has been in operation for just five or six days and we already have recruited 33 members (although some have yet to post, which annoys me greatly). Each new member I have personally welcomed to the site (even if my appointed GMod and Mods have already done so) so I make sure they feel comfortable and in a good community.
I create topics to stimulate discussion to keep my site active and fresh, and I am working hard to make my site look its best. I've written out forum rules and members lists as well as information and how to apply for Staff positions.
Basically the point I am trying tot get across is that I believe I am cut out for the Head Admin job, and that I am doing a good job so far. ;D

I have been everything from member to Admin like many others on here. I used to be the Admin o 2 boards a number of years ago - 1 I was invited to be and the other, my own. It was a great learning experience in countless many ways and I still use (or not use) even now as a member. I've recently returned to forums as to personal reasons I had to disappear for a while and I'm apart of well established forums and very new forums, with staff of various abilities and experiences. I try and offer help wherever I can, as I'm sure like some of you out there we learnt on our own. I think its important to share experiences and knowledge and its ultimately up to the staff to decide what to do with that information. From these experiences, I login everyday regardless of my position on a board or at least every 2 days if possible and I try to post new topics, reply to others so people aren't waiting. Not sure whether I would like to return to a staff position at the moment though, think I'm just going to ease back into things

Well, I was a member of a forum before I made my own. Now my forum has eleven members, all of which are active. We're all good friends there and we are mainly carefree group. On the other forum I was a member of, I had five friends. All five joined my forum.
That's about all.

As someone said above, all admins started off as members. Admins work hard to earn their titles on a board, and didn't just beg and beg and beg the main admin of a site. I am currently an admin on one site, and formerly one on several other sites. I love my admin status, but I make sure that I don't abuse it. Admin-ing a site gets hard at times, especially with me applying for college in RL, and several other stuff that I can't mention here.
For several times, the main admin and I tried to keep our site active. It worked at times, others ultimately failed. Right now, my (because the main admin hasn't logged-in in like, forever) site has recruited around 15 members, who made different characters. But in all fairness, admins and members should respect each other like a cycle. Admins don't rule the world lol. Actually, I am younger than around a half, or most, of the members on my site. XD that's all, basically.

As has been stated, if you cannot be a good member, there's a very low chance that you can be a good admin. Now, an exception to this is that you were a bad member because of the bad forum you're on - you don't like the way it is run, and they don't treat you correctly, so you don't have exactly the best stand in with them. You could still provide a very nice forum that you think is run nicely on your own.
However, that being said, there are also members that will go breaking rules on one site, racking up themselves bans and records, they likely won't make a good admin. Especially if they are very young, seeing as some are twelve year olds that simply will knock off a forum that they go on simply to be staff. They don't realize that it will be work and go around making goofy boards and things that shouldn't be there.
It take an optimistic person to be a staff, an admin especially. If you're grumpy and easy to upset, you're likely not going to be a good admin. You have to learn the self control and limits that you need for being an admin of a site, and how to punish people correctly on the site. If you give someone a ban for a slight rudeness infraction, you have to know that they may never come back after the ban because of a not well hosted forum.
There are some forums with king admins that think they are better than all members. They think "Well, I am your head admin and I provide you with this awesome forum. You better kiss up to me and bow at everything I do, or I will ban you for life because I'm just THAT awesome." Someone like that may make a good member (though not one I would want), however as an admin, they will likely repel members with their bad outlook on how a forum should be run.

Pretty much, all admins start out as a member to some forum, somewhere. Me being no exception. I was a member on various RPG sites for two years before I even thought about becoming an admin myself. And even then, my first site, I never even finished, and that was a whole year ago. It look horrible, but the idea that I had for it was fairly original. That is the first sign of a future good admin. If the idea's that they have are original (nothing against successful admins with unoriginal idea's), then they have a fairly good shot at being successful. This is, of course, only if they are also members on other forums, and can count on some of their friends to come over and join, or at least some members. This isn't to say that you should steal members, as I am a very dedicated member and I would never think to leave any of my forums unless I was personally sent a message telling me that the RPG was officially dead.
The next thing that a good admin needs to have is a good sense of fashion or graphic design. Let's face it, nobody wants to join a forum that looks like complete, the designer had five minutes to spare, cr**. If you want to create a successful forum, the colors have to look good, match or at least compliment the main color, and be designed to look like the original idea of the skin. Also, it helps if your banner is "Pretty" too, because yet again, nobody is going to want to join a site which has a bad banner. Also, I would stay away from real dark, emo skins, because they tend to deter members. Don't ask me why or how, they just do. I was almost put off joining a forum because the skin was black with gray words, and I found it very hard to read.
Next, if you do get a site that looks good, has a fairly original idea, then the next step is to not over-admin things. A good set of rules is a must, but please don't go over-board on this! I have been deterred from several sites because the rules were longer than three rulers put together. Also, navigation around your forum is a valid point. You want your boards to be easy to navigate through, so this means, please don't put random titles! It just makes the site confusing and hard to navigate, which, yet again, deters members from joining.
Then, if you have all of that down, and you open, the two words that should be like a song stuck in your head should be: ADVERTISE, AFFILIATE! I can't stress that enough! How are you supposed to get any members if no one even knows about your site. Remember, sites thrive and die by word of mouth! You need to be out there, and don't stop until you have a fairly good portion of members. Even then, you'd better have a completely choc-full affiliates board if you even think about slowing down advertising your site. I've seen admins who have one or two affiliates, and who are wondering why their forum doesn't have many members.
If you have gotten this far, then you have the beginnings of a fairly successful board. Please, don't forget that a friendly admin=happy members=happy forum. This is what I am hoping to do for my forum at least. Hope I help ad to the discussion!
