When Your a member you dont need to be on alot. Your free. People dont expect anything of you but obeying the rules. When your an admin people expect you to not just take advantege of your power.
Me? I dont know witch one I'm better at being. But my favorite part of being admin is designing a templete.

Well, it is very true, but you are also a bit free being an admin, but you are expected to get on every couple of days. If you don't have internet access or the will to administrate a forum, then don't even try becoming an admin until you can accomplish these. If you can't do these, then you are just better off being a member of a forum and helping them grow.
Another thing that you should think about is that are you going to do work in this. Or are you going to find people to do all of this stuff for you. If you are going to do that, then don't even try it. I have people who help me with my forum, but I do most of the administration myself, which is perfectly reasonable.

I am sad to say I find myself being a better member but I am an admin. I was a member of one site before I created mine and only did this because of the admin of the site I belonged to. She was one of those who believes she is right and was bad mouthing a friend of mine that also belonged to the site. My friend quit and I quit along with her. We joined teams and created a site and actually have 7 members from the original site.
I believe as an admin you should be very wary of who you make mods. I only made mods of the people I knew from the former site and only because I trusted them, most of them was mods on that site and I knew they would treat my site and members with respect. Whatever you do DO NOT make mods of members you just met. Get to know them, watch what they are doing, and make sure you have had no problems with them.
I do tell the other staff with problems with members and only to make sure if they notice something the member can be told they are in trouble. The members get warnings for abusing other members as I had trouble with that on the former site and the admin had did nothing so I grew very angry about that. I do not ban members unless it is something they know is not allowed. If they do not read rules I calmly point them towards the rule and delete their post, only after making sure they realize what they have done wrong.
When the site was created me and my friend spent about a month fixing everything up, we created skins, boards, and many threads. Along the way we invited the now mods and all of us posted and looked around and added whatever we thought a future member would like. We made sure we posted our thoughts so members would not be shy about posting theirs.
Now the site is still slightly new as it only opened in January and we only have 50ish members. I make sure I know each member, welcome them in their introduction page(if your site does not have one of these you most definitely need to add one as it is a great way to know what your members like and you can relate to them more), and I always be friendly. I have many suggestion threads so our members can tell us what they think should be added. I always carefully think over each suggestion then talk it over with my co admin. Unless it is something i think would be a great add to the site. Just a couple of days ago one of my members sugested something and I realized it was something we could use so I thanked her for her suggestion and added it. By doing this she was happy and it made the board seem more friendly and let the other members know they could suggest stuff and that it would be thought about. Also if we decide not to use it we explain why to the member so it does not seem we are ignoring them.
I find all of this really helps your site seem more user friendly and helps get and keep members who participate and will follow rules.

I'm a better member then i am admin.
I liked to design simple proboard designs, but that doesnt stop me from actually posting on my other favorite proboards that i barely even know the admin. Of course many ppl want to be better admins, but its just to much stress.
However, the only thing i dislike about being a member. If I say anything stupid that the admin doesnt like (beliefs or whatever), they could be immature and ban me.

hey i have forum but if i give admin status for other member he haven't avaible "Member Group" (i allowed all to yes in this group on admin user) but dont work plz help me in this Only the main admin can create and modify member groups. You can give others the power to assign members to different groups however. As far as being an admin or a member I personally think I'm a better member then I am an admin. But that's not to say I'm a terrible admin, quite the opposite in fact. I think I'm a great admin but my heart has always been in posting with the people and just being part of the gang. The best advice I could give to anyone who wants to be an admin is patience. I have been very patient with my members, I answer every question asked to the best of my ability no matter how many times they ask it. I'm not one to put the ol' ban hammer into overuse either, in fact in the over a year's time that our forum has existed I have not had to ban any members thus far. The way I look at it is that I'm just another member who happens to know all the rules, and I'll help out however I can.

I have recently started my first forum and I totally agree that you cannot expect members to just come in and make threads themselves, you must allow yourself to make threads that are open and have quality in them. I also agree that anyone who abuses their power on the board doesn't deserve to be an admin. An admin should be fair and good, they should never have any biased or in-jokes as I think that deletes the privelage of membership. You join join a board to become part of the forum, not to have in-jokes made at you and be treated differently to another member.

I have had proboards forum for almost two years and I made that mistake with a friend from the first site I joined, they deserted the site we made while I was unable to get on, only a mod stayed on to check it well I was unable to get on for six months and when I came back she was promoted. Though she did not abuse it she stole the idea of the plot, which i had made for herself which made me very upset as I trusted her. She then deleted the forum as I had gave her full powers.
I'm not sure but I think I make a good admin and member, I am active on my own forums and me and my staff try to make our own skins and images. I trust all my staff and we all get along, we have never had an arguement or a disagreement yet and the forum is a run on from another forum where they were all staff members. I disagree with staff auditions and competions but on one site, they had a banner making competion and the winner was made a trainee staff member, with very limited powers, untill they were proved trustworthy, which worked well but why give out powers here and there to someone that just joined your forum, I wa offered a coding/design mod position just because in introduction I said i do skins and minor coding, but I declined. The admin ought to wait untill I proved myself trustworthy before offering me a position like that.
I think I am good at being a member as I contribute and am pretty much a Mary Sue sometimes, though the staff and other members know to trust me and that they can talk to me. I try to build up trust with other members in all forums I admin or staff or am a member on. Patience is essential to being a good member or admin, though sometimes it is very hard.

As a member of a proboards forum originally - I have been there from pretty much day one and now I am Admin of the site along with the main admin. I think this makes you a better admin as you have been there through it all and seen a place grow with input and patience - where as if i had just decided to do my own forum and admin it i'd have got frustrated with the slow process that it can be to get members. We are a fairly active forum as it goes, but we both still post daily on there and either create discussions in quieter days or contribute to others the members have started. but for a long time in the early days we had discussions on there all by ourselves lol I've been reading many many MANY posts on the issues regrading forums and proboards trying to learn a bit more about the techinical side of it so i can be a better admin for him. (God we sound like an old married couple ) And if you read this Mista-Double - see i am trying Shell x

Well, I am currently an admin of three boards. Oy, is that a stressful duty. I act like a member but I do watch the wording. It's like a big family. No, I am strict but very friendly. Yes, high standards, but not cruel.
As I noticed, I am the only board so far I seen, when new members apply we send a welcome introduction, just welcome. Then, we let them post on the welcome forum, and then we welcome like a sister or a brother. Hahaha, what else? then they are just part of the family!

For most of those points I am actually a good admin. However, finding a design team is difficult when the majority of the internet hates you for some unknown reason. I designed a lot of it myself and had real world friends code a lot of it for me (or else used admin support forums for coding).
However, Defender has existed since July of 2005 and it only has seventy members. I don't delete inactive members either. Still, I refuse to abandon it. It's sort of an idealistic thing for me. Defender's purpose was to be a flame-free community. With the increase in flaming I have noticed on other boards, it means that I am failing my mission and I must work even harder to make this happen.
Also I have enough staff to staff a board of three thousand members (six admins and about a dozen mods). My board is still in war mode. We have been attacked on numerous occasions by numerous different people and organizations. People spam. People troll. People flame (on an anti-flaming board no less). The worst one has to be when people come on and prove that they are good at design/coding. I auth them so they can recode the site and they sabotage it.
I have a single high offense and you're banned policy on my board. I need this because without it people attack my boards. How do I stop being a mean admin with a squad of staff members strong enough to police Smogon and still not get attacked?
