I 100 percent agree that affiliates are a great thing. I just wish that we'd do more when affiliated.
Such as sharing some ideas, images, and that stuff.
Now why is it only links? Tell me what you think about doing more than just giving links.

We had just the links posted in a thread made especially, but now we have little banners along top of the main page and you just click on them to be directed to their site - they look so cute! http://removed I think affiliates are a good idea. Admittedly, we don't affiliate with other general fan forums like our own site because we don't want to lose members to other sites that we are in competition with. We tend to affiliate with Twilight sites that offer something we don't, like RPG or a proper big site that isn't strictly a forum, or art sites where we have permission to use their wallpapers for our skins, as a way of saying thankyou to them and to direct members to check out their other artwork and fanfiction

Hey sorry, small question and I haven't spotted it asked before put if it has sorry Anyway I've used this code, and I've put up six sites in it, the problem is they're going on on top of the other so they're cutting off any of the new sites, how can I have it that each banner shows side by side because if I keep making it bigger it will take up the bottom of my site without needing to. If that's unclear look here at the bottom of the page they keep just lining up in twos

I use affiliates. And personally think they are useless. I would remove them but meh.

I have to disagree ShaolinAce, mainly because there have been a few members from other sites that have clicked the links on affiliates, so I've found they do work. However, I also agree in part, especially if the affiliate table has hundreds, then its really hard for someone to sit through and see them all. Though the random display thing can work nicely for compensation. It also helps, in my opinion, to have the affiliates inside the advertising board or a separate board for it, I have noticed that it can slow a forum down with hundreds of affiliates on the main page. Or that could just be me, but I find it keeps the main page also more streamlined and less cluttered. I use them, and haven't really countered many problems, so until I do, I'll keep using affiliates.
Also, it helps affiliating with sites that are different to yours, like it says in one other thread to do so and same with advertising because people on a general forum may be interested in joining more so than people on a similar forum as what you have, if I make sense.

So, I'm not exactly sure if affiliates help that much. I haven't found a site through their affiliate button, myself...but of course that doesn't mean nobody else does. They can't hurt, so why not have affiliates? Who knows? Someone might click your sites' affiliate button and decide to join..
I agree with Stinky666 on affiliating with loads of forums.. The less affiliate buttons there are to choose from, the more likely someone will actually click one. Although, how can we pick and choose whom to affiliate with and whom not to? =/

Dead Affiliates: When is a site sufficiently dead to warrant button removal?
I keep an open site that affiliates with any site who asks to, provided they are appropriate and legal, which means I have to frequently prune the table or the sites build up. And nobody wants to affiliate with dead sites...obviously nobody is going to be around to click on your button over there. I now have my affiliate-death time period set at one month: If there's been no member posts made {excluding ads} within the last month, the site gets removed from our table.
Does anyone think that's too long/short a wait?

Yeah, I have it stated that if they're going to be temporarily down they just have to let us know and we won't remove them. I always give a failing site the benefit of the doubt, and we tell them that if they do get removed, if they get active, all they have to do is drop back in and reapply and they will be added back.
We have 30 visible slots on our table and around 100 total. I try to keep it under 100. It's a scrollable div, so allows you to see more at once than on a marquee, and gives more control, but yeah there's a lot of'em in there. The drawback to allowing anyone at all to affilate {provided they're legal etc.} We like to be friendly and give small upstart sites a chance. Because we all started out there. It's rough.
