One of the best websites to generate traffic is www.klicktheweb.com There is a little side box which allows you to submit your forum. Just enter a false email when it asks otherwise you will be spammed. It submits to hundreds of search engines including the biggies Google, MSN, and Yahoo. After I submitted my site, I instantly got 20 spiders and then in the next few days a few new members.

I have an awful time trying to get members. I have an original idea, affiliated (still working on it) and have entered my forum in the search engines. As well as advertising. What am I doing wrong?

I've been having the same problem at my forum. Is there anything wrong with it in anyone else's opinion? I've been trying to make my board to where everyone will be comfortable with it.

Yeah, the skin for one. It doesn't match at all.
(Forums do NOT GROW over NIGHT). That is all. Mine took two or three days to get members, then another two or tree days for posts. Advertising is a big thing for a forum, so do it with caution.

I would suggest looking at your competitions sites and seeing where they are advertised, you can search google to find that out.

I've been having the same problem at my forum. Is there anything wrong with it in anyone else's opinion? I've been trying to make my board to where everyone will be comfortable with it. You have to realize that you can't please everyone. If you make it a certian way, then some will complain. If you fix their complaints then others will complain. Forums take a lot of paitence and thats really something I don't have.

I have had my forum for over a week, but no one except for people I know in real life have joined so far. I have worked very hard on advertising and worked very hard on the skin. I have also tried hard to keep it active with the limited members. What am I doing wrong?

Alright, here's the problem a lot of people are having and it's partly a result of our culture. We want results and we want it right now. Unfortunately that's not how things so the first thing to do is to have the right mindset. You can't just make a board, throw a color scheme, some graphics and some boards together and go advertise it and expect hundreds of people to join right away.
Advertising is a building process. You need to have something to start with and that's a good forum. Make sure that you have good content that will interest people including filling all boards with 0 posts. Make sure that it stays fairly active even if you are the one posting the content all the time.
Start with submitting your board URL to some search engines like Google and Yahoo. That way eventually your forum will come up on the list when someone is looking for your type of Proboard. Remember that search engines use certain terms in their search and that the number of hits to a certain site can improve its ranking. You're not going to be the first one on the list for a while yet.
Next, start trying to affiliate with some boards like yours and some not like yours. Don't stick to all just like yours because if you do, why would anyone join? Why would they leave the board they're on now to join a new one? Try to find some boards with similarities with yours but not quite that topic and try to affiliate with them as you might find more potential members that way. Now, be prepared to not be accepted by everyone as some boards do have affiliation requirements, if you get refused the first time, try again at a different time but don't badger.
Also, visit different boards and check for advertising boards. Check what the rules are before posting because if you just spam your board everywhere it'll develop a bad reputation and people won't join. Develop some kind of message for people. If you just do "Hey, I need members, so please join!" you're not going to convince many people to join. You then look desperate and that's not good for a forum because again you develop a bad reputation. Advertising is trying to sell something. You are trying to sell your board. What are the fine points about your board? Why is your board better than others of its type? What do you offer that's different? Be very careful that you don't exaggerate about your board. Don't call yourself #1 unless you have something to back it up with otherwise you could end up with a bad reputation and ruin your chances to gain members through advertising.
It's important to note that you shouldn't just keep advertising in the same place every 5 minutes. Give it time to let your message sink in and come back. Keep adjusting your advertising message.
A good method to advertise is to have a small banner to put into your signature at different forums you're on with a link to your board if the board you're on lets you do it. Join other boards like yours if you have an interest in it but don't spam the members of those sites as that could again ruin your board reputation and ruin advertising for you. If you're a productive member of different communities you could reap great rewards from grateful people that come to check out what you're like as an admin.
Most importantly be patient. Like I said at the start of my post, you're not going to get results right away. You have to be patient and take what you can get. Realize that there are millions of Proboards and other message boards out there competing for the same members you are.
