I found the best form of advertising that got the most members on my forum has been word of mouth. I had several friends in real life that happen to like Sailor Moon so I told them about the forum and they join then I knew a fair few of online friends on my contacts list on Yahoo that I told about the forum. From there their friends told their friends and the cycle continues getting me more members. I also found that topsites, advertising any place that allows you to, and affiliates also works wonder. I also advertised my site link on several Yahoo groups that a friend joined me. So far I must say I got the most members since my opening via word of mouth

Agreed...the topsites are fantastic. My football forum, click my sig to see, is submitted on 2 of them and its 4th on one and on another one its 7th, above some very well run and big sites too! So thats dragged in a few for me, but I could still do with getting more. I have made some big name affiliates too so thats gonna be a help in the long run....I hope! ...and also have a blog idea in mind so its all good! :p

yeah, on prem chat, we have about 30 members, and we are higher on the voting sites than some with 7000 thousand. simply because we ask people to help us out and remember to vote daily.

Advertising is a great way to get members to come to your forum but I think the most affective way to get members is to affiliate. Because if you affiliate with site of the same subject as your forum members of your partner's site will likely see your banner and come to check out if not join your site.

I usually just go around advertising on different boards. I'll make sure that the member base is a base that will be interested in coming on to my board though. I mean I'm not going to advertise a Video Game rp on a Gossip Girls rp. To me that really doesn't make sense. And I usually stick to proboard sites since I know the people on the board might be more used to pro boards. You won't know how picky some people are about the hosts they use, its obnoxious. T__T

In 2007, when I originally opened my site, I submitted it to Google and a few other search Engines - and honestly it has payed off more than advertising on any other site. It's actually the number one answer I get when I ask people "How did you find us?" Well...that's probably because it's the first thing that comes up on Google when you type in its base with the word Rp Normally when I advertise, I look for more "Scifi" boards, because Scifi people tend to have a wide variety of Scifi interests - and might site be one of them. I do go out of the way to find other boards that are the same topic as mine [meaning we both use the same show as a base] and try to affiliate with them, just so my members have a chance to see other sites with the same topic matter and if they want a more canon version of the site. I even divide my affiliates from "Doctor Who" sites and "Non Doctor Who Sites". Something that I realized awhile back, is that a ton of sites are never advertised here - so going through the rest of the ads that are posted on a board and finding one that you haven't seen on here before might unlock a whole group of sites who have never heard of your site - which might be something they are looking for.

I thought of spreading banners and small flyers through the mail, but that does not work. Any suggestions?

I find a mix of posting adds on other sites and word of mouth. When i create a forum i go post crazy with adds, and when i gain members i dont then stop posting adds. Advertising needs to be continuous. I also agree Youtube is a great advertising area, posting up video's and fan trailers i also find adds your site more into the Google search engines. Word of mouth, though i have to be honest always works far better than posting adds. I RP on allot of boards and normally find most my members come from other boards I RP on or are friends of people who RP on my forum.

At first, i wasn't too sure how to advertise my board, I had a few "friends" from the board of which i was a member to, and i asked them to check it out and maybe join. I PMed them and asked them to take a look around. They did and ended up joining up starting my board off with maybe ehhh. 4-5 people, at first i thought it was a good start, but i needed more to fill in my military RPG. I typed up a small advert saying that we needed members and we're looking for feedback and stuff like that.
Eventually my little small group grew to a group of about 10-15 people. I then went on AIM and MYSPACE and FACEBOOK and started posting links in every about me, every place where a link could go. Then i went to my RL friends and asked if they wanted to check it out. A few did and i got more nad more members.
Lastly i just went here to PBS looking for help when i found this awesome community. I found the Advertise your board section and started advertising and going on different sites and posting up Ads and talking to more and mroe people.

I have never seen anyone advertise via Facebook and Myspace for their forums I guess. Does that really work? Do people really join and stay active? I would see it as one of those things you add that you are a fan of, but that no one else does anything with beyond joining the group. Does it really work?

I've actually advertised on myspace and those members that joined my board were quite active until two of them had a fight on myspace then one left along with his friend and never came back. A few months later the person that started the fight left too. But it depends if its a role play board your advertising on myspace it would help if some of the friends on your list were role players never tried it on facebook Ive still dont have a hang of facebook =/
