Also, I think it's mostly the admin's job to advertise. You can't always expect your members to do it for you. They might be able to tell a few friends how they enjoy a site and they should check it out, but it is mostly the admin's job to advertise. I agree with you for the most part. On my site, I do all of the advertising, 24-7, but we don't have many members. On big sites, I think it's too much for the admin to have to do it all by themselves. So sometimes it's the admin's job, but on bigger sites, the members have to help too.

word of mouth is the best form of advertising to me, that's how I got most members to join one of my forums. and it's great that current members like the place so much to invite their friends or tell them about it.

You know, if you advertise enough, you can get a few to join. It's the retention of those members that's the problem for me. They'll join, post 1 thing and then never return.

edr and Panda, try to make sure you meet the length requirements for posts in this board. ;]
Panda, you definitely make a good point. Advertising is about getting to people and getting them to join, but a very important part is making sure that you have enough content and activity to keep them interested. Perhaps that can be factored into what method of advertisement works best. Advertising over the internet reaches a very broad audience, but it doesn't touch on much of what your forum may actually hold for members once they get there. On the other hand, word of mouth is more personal, and people may be able to tell you all the reasons they joined and stayed active. Hearing positive words about a forum from an active member is often much more powerful than a simple aesthetically pleasing banner.

Good in theory, yet.. say, for instance, you have a gfx board and your friends have no interest what so ever- what then? I have many friends keen users of the internet but none the least bit interested in message boards Yes me too... So i just don't know how to make people come and visit my site daily... I seem want to give up

For some reason my members do not tell ANYONE else about my board. I seem to be the only one REALLY advertising. I don't get it. At least one of 415 members should have told at least one of thier friends. Ya know what I mena? I know what you mean. I also seem to be the only one on my site doing the advertising, even my co-admin who is also my best friend in real life doesn't even help me in advertising. I only have something like 11 members though, so that can be the reason why =p But I guess the site has only been open about a week.

Word of mouth is the best place to go. However, I'll be darned if anyone I knew invited anyone over. I'm likely to think that a few people I know are into the sort of things I like, so I'm a tad stuck.
Every friend that I do keep into contact with, has an interest in role-play in general. However, a bulk of them are not very fond of forums be it bad experience or not used to the ones set-up like most others here or one of my own. I could write a very thorough and well put together rules list, and they are likely to split because something like MySpace has virtually no rules to their group where in which mine does. So while I know folks who would love to join it, considering my other RP hub has a lot to do with cartoons [it essentially being an askewed take on the Roger Rabbit film and book], they're more privy to getting away with everything than settling down for something more humble and quaint.
Right now my best bet seems to be advertising and getting my name out. I've had quite a few places link to it like some of my websites and on deviantArt, and so on. Now I just need to wait and see, I suppose.

I think word of mouth can work, not just to get members to join, but to get them to stay around and make more than one post, but you have to offer some incentives!
I have had some success on my board by offering established members special rewards - such as a 'congratulations' thread dedicated to them (or you could award karma points if you have karma enabled) - if they recommend a friend who then joins and makes at least 10 posts. Once a new member has made 10 or more posts, they are likely to have had a good look around your board and got some responses from other members, making it more likely they will stick around. The established member will feel more inclined to encourage their friend to make posts if there is a reward in it for them.
I also offer all my members their own special 'custom title' once they have made 500 posts. I currently have 6 members who have earned this custom title, and at least a couple more who have nearly made it. The longer your members stick around and keep posting, the more likely they will be to tell their friends about your site.

So far I'm working on something like that, but even then the threads still don't attract much attention beyond maybe looking at it once or twice. =/
There are only two prominent members on my forum, and that'd probably be me and someone from another forum which is daily and active each day which I invited over. The other three, one of which was quite new, don't seem to be of the conversationalist type - and I'm a bit hesistant to take the chance on giving them perks if they're not really going to reply to that either. It goes with the other two members in that group.
I don't want to give up though. Today some of the friends I asked to come over to put some new spins are working their way up towards the forum and hopefully should put some energy back in it to keep the conversations fresh. Good thing I know quite a few folks in the RP community in general.

I'm an experienced forum contributor at most levels, member, moderator and Admin, with probably 20,000 posts over half a dozen forums in the last five years. I decided to start a single issue board to support and inform a small group of people scattered over much of the planet who I considered to be discriminated against by their government in violation of the UN Human Rights Charter.
I started off emailing two or three people I knew would want to be involved to get it running then I used as many online sites as I could find, that would already attract these people, to announce the existence of my forum. I would contact the admin to explain I wasn't poaching members and rarely received a refusal to post on their site. Then I hit the social networking sites, emailed news outlets, harassed online news papers.
After six month I probably have 5-10% of my target group signed up. If you consider how many of that group wouldn't be computer literate, just use the 'net for email or are just plain antisocial it's not too bad a result.

My forum is a horror forum, and while I have friends that do watch horror, they aren't as into it as I am. They may join if I asked and spread the word, but odds are, them and anyone they got to join with them would only be around a short time. At least, that's the way I see it playing out.
I use an affiliation banner on the site, and that has gotten a few folks on the forum. I've also tried some online banner exchange sites, but it seems that most I join are already dead...or at least inactive at the time.
The forum has been open since April, and I have 12 members. Most of which have posted once and left, as mentioned. And there are basically no rules, other than be courteous, no porn, and try to watch the language. I'm the only staff member, but that hasn't been an issue,as there's not been many to mod, lol. I can't think of any other way to advertise, short of joining a pay site.
And, I'm not willing to do that at the moment.

Yeah, word of mouth is great. But advertizing can bring quite a few members! Although, probably not as many. I do both types.

;D Hi all! Speaking of 'Word of Mouth' I just changed my url for my site and I'm just curious.... how long does it take for the new url to take effect? Once that's done, I'm gonna go to my google home page and a few other places, and update. I'm only asking because I don't want to go around, telling people and then they try the new page and they're like, 'Huh'? and don't return to my page. Hmmm....just got a new email. Hopefully, it's to tell me the purchase went through. Cyber shopping can be almost as annoying as regular shopping, minus the crying babies! BRB.
