Recommend? Well, half and half. If you don't have time, or you see an unusual one you like, you could use one. But you need that original look. If you can do it yourself, do. Or if you can get someone to do it customly for you, which I have done before. The other thing is how good it looks. If your forum looks really bad, yes, it may be the only option for you. The other thing you can do is use a premade skin as in colours only, from somewhere that gives you them with colours and gradients. Then you can work on that.
Designs Forums Big no-no. A designs forum should have their own custom skin, made by the admin or graphics designers. If you can't do a template, you shouldn't be running a designs forum. Simple as that. An original look is a must on a design forum.

I, personally, have never used a free pre-made template. While I am a designer, I feel that even before I could design, using somebody else's full work would be a bad idea. I can hardly explain this accurately, but I feel that since I cannot change the design at all, there is no point in using them.
Also, my board would be unoriginal, and most pre-made templates are very sloppily done these days (I have to admit, but they are free).
I've made pre-made templates, but owning a very well-known design forum, I never had an urge to use a premade template since beginning my forum. I feel that with a design forum, you should be able to design and want to. Not just own a design forum in hopes that others come and be your graphical slaves, and owning no graphical talent.

I would reccomend a premade to a forum administrator who's new to forums, especially seeing on how (no offense because this even applied to me ) awful the colours and design can be on your first forum. But once you'e had a forum for so long, I belive you should atleast attempt to replace the premade skin with a custom one. Veterains I personally belive shouldn't use them. Unless they are their own But I certainly belive the a graphic forum of all things should use it's own graphics, because it's false advertising really. The design of a graphic's forum is supposed to give a guest an impression of the quality of designer's at the forum, not how good they are at instlling templates

I agree with most people here. I don't really like premade skins, because you should really take the time to make some for your own. If you're a new administrator, I guess you could use premade skins, but then you really haven't done your job as an administrator. An administrator has to create the board and the content, but is also responsible for the skin. I really think original skins are much better.
If you find a premade template that's original, then it's a bit better to use it. But i'm really for making your own. That's all I really have to say about this topic.

Yes, pre-made skins are easy to use if you know nothing of putting together one of your own. However, I like the personal touch of a regular made skin instead of the pre-made ones. Most of the pre-mades I've seen aren't to my liking, but that's just me. Newer admins (as said many times) probobly would like a pre-made skin just so it's easier to run the site.. not having to worry about color codes and designing.
However, to me, unless I find the right one, which could take days, even weeks, it's pointless. I enjoy spending time working on the colors and graphics, even if I have to ask other people for help.
So, overall, I do like pre-mades for newbies, but for more advanced Proboards users, add your own touch to it. <3

Yes. As most people have said. I think for people that cant design, they should use one. It will look better than just colors at least. I used a pre-made template for a gaming site a long timeback and I got at least 2 members a day.
But if you're doing a design site, you should make your own. Otherwise, whats the point of the "design" part of your forum?

I think that for some, especially those just starting out, that premade skins can be helpful to a degree....but that as soon as possible, one should begin to branch out, and create your own skins. I have in the past used premade skins, to help me see just what I need to do, and to figure out how to best get colours and graphics to coordinate. Don't recommend using them as the basis of your forum, as others have said, you lose the originality and uniqueness of your forum, and sometimes, I have to look at some and go, WHAT WERE YOU THINKING? The colours simply don't match the theme of the board. (For instance, a Car Racing forum, that may use dolphins for a background...WHY?)
Now, I have made my own "skins", almost all are simply using monochromatic colour schemes, such as I have one on a board, that is "shades of blues".....using of course, blues for the theme. I have not added a lot of graphics to mine, as I have a number of members on dial up and it makes the pages load far too slow for them with a lot of graphics. I have updated New Posts/No new Posts, and they don't mind that, but when I added backgrounds, and all that, many of them were having too much difficulty in getting the pages to load in a timely manner. I have seen many who make skins for their forums, and just number them, and you have to go through all to find out what the colours are....I make a point of making sure that somehow they will know, such as Shades of Blue, Shades of Brown, etc...(You get the idea). There are a lot of sites out there that have the colour charts, and I have found two that allow you to see complimentary, or monochromatic colour schemes right there, to help you put together your own skins, and know that it will look good.
An important thing to remember when making skins, is not so much what colours you may like, but what colours can be read on the colours you choose. A bright yellow on a white background or on a light pink background is almost impossible to read, so test out your scheme, before applying it to the boards, and make sure that it is readable. If you really want the colours, make a point of creating other skins for the others, that are maybe not your cup of tea, so that your members can actually read what is being written. Something also to consider, and I've run into the last few weeks, is figuring out if you may have someone who is colour blind, and what do the colours you choose for your board look like to them. There are different types of colour blindness, and they see the colours differently than most. Try to use colours that won't be assaulting to them, and that can still be readable. Perhaps find out what type of colour blindness they may have and create a skin for them, that allows them to read the forum without strain.
Just some things to consider, whether you make your own skins or you use premade ones.

i think that whether or not you should use a premade skin or not depends entirely on what kind of board you have. If you have a forum for a gaming clan, then absolutely. I know very few exceptional gamers that are also exceptional graphics designers. I'm not saying that there arent any, I'm just saying that most gamers aren't. Graphics forums, however, should not have them at all. It drives me crazy when I go onto a graphics forum, and I see a copyright at the bottom. It wouldn't take long to create a temporary skin when your forum starts out... maybe just a few gradients in the headers, and a few codes to put in a welcome table, info center, and some other things. Then you can start working on the permanent skin, and maybe even have some of your first members help. I think that a decent looking graphics forum is 100 times better than an amazing one with a copyright at the bottom

Well. For noobs like me with no graphic intellect, pre-made skins are ok, though i still prefer to jack around and make my own, even if it totally sucks. Most of the good Pre-mades are taken thousands of times over, so for someone to invest the extra time to make their own, it shows that the forum is tailored from an individual person, which in a way, makes it feel a bit more homely. It gives off the image that you can talk to real people, instead of a bunch of copies of other peoples sites.

I think premade skins are wonderful. Reason being, that having a website involves more than graphics. I spend loads of time writing xhtml/css/xslt/rss/xml. Everytime I made one new webpage, I have to update 1) the navigation connections, 2) sitemap, 3) rss, 4) xml, and 5) get it pinged or 6) log in to Google Sitemaps and alert them, oh yes and 7) validate all that at W3C. I can't do everything. If I start learning graphics, that code will slip. I've seen tons of sites with invalid html. Highly invalid, and the pages load poorly. Some people blog constantly, and criticize those who rarely make a new post. Meanwhile, their html code is abominable, but they're oblivious to it. They think if they make a new blog post twice a week, they've done it all. Added to which, I've personally never seen two forums that looked the same, except for the proliferance of phpBB style forums in blue and white. Maybe that's because I go to xml, xhtml, etc. type forums. If I went to graphics forums, maybe I would see popular skins passed around. Graphics people live in another world from other parts of the internet. While looking at skins, I saw some really complex gorgeous graphics designs. I don't see that when I'm out surfing on particular topics though. The majority of forums I've been to on the internet are totally flat and plain, just background-color and text-color. There seems to be no connection between content and design most of the time. Like intellectuals don't connect to graphics designers. If I were in graphics myself, I'd be sad if my designs just sat there, not utilized. I looked at 100 templates before I found one that fit in with my site design and then it took several days to find icons and add in js tricks to do what I needed. In the meantime, I got a few letters from my website visitors saying, "I hope you'll put up more pictures in the website gallery." I hope I'll have time to eat breakfast in the morning too, or maybe I'll just run my body on caffeine because I don't have a spare minute. All told, I'm really thrilled that there are templates. Scorpian's stuff is fantastic, nice blends, full sets of icons and all. I know my limitations. I might be an ace at xhtml/css, but I'm lost when I look at colors and shapes, because my brain is all logical formulas. When I look at colors, it's an undefined wonderland. It all looks good to me. How to choose? If someone else can do it well, why would I struggle to "do it myself" when it will obviously come out clumsy and amateurish? Well, the coffee break is over. I'm out of here. You graphics people are a godsend.

The currnet skin on my forum is orignal, at least as a skin. It's a picture I applied. I generally wouldn't use a pre-made skin, because I don't want to look like a mold from a factory line, but I have been thinking of adding a few nice ones I've seen, just to give the members an option. I would make my own, but I'm not good at that kind of thing, at least not yet. So for the default skin I'm keeping it original, but I'm going to add a few pre-made to the list so the members can change how they view the place.

Some skins are nice, but i hate the idea of having someone elses name on my board. So, i make my own skins and images, and can take pride in the fact that my board is completely of my own creation. since my brother and i have merged, he'll let me do the skins, and he does the images.. but the thing that sucks about it is if you have some yahoo, ripping our images, and then saying we ripped them.. but luckily for me, I always copyright my work, and am always able to find my name on it.. i also make a habit of saving the .psds, with the layers, so if in the event that that should happen, I can take it up with a higher power, and the other person would be forced to take it down.. But as nice as premades are, they make it virtually impossible to say that your board is original, and yet you have a skin, that is being used by at least 10 other boards on the same service.. So for that, always make my own skins and images.

I use a premade skin because I haven't got a clue about codes, however I did customize the buttons and smileys and created my own banner/logo/header. i'm new to the forum and hope to pick up some tricks to improve the look, traffic, member, posts, etc. etc. etc.

Pre mades are good for those who want a nice looking board but can't produce the goods themselves. i dont think people should be looked down upon just because they use a pre-made either.
the only thing i think a premade should not be used for is for graphics forums where the type of forum basically specifies a custom template

I don't use them myself, I like to make my own. Quick & easy enough, but does your forum then look like everyone else's? They do look neat though & if I needed to I would give it a go, but why not use your own imagination?
