I recently started a Board ( [No Advertising] ). I'm trying to put a chat box on it, so other charactors can talk on it. My name on it is Rogue Warrior. Thank You I keep getting script Erro's on C Box when I use it on my forum.... Whats up with that??? Please asks these questions in the Support Board. Thanks.

I've never had issues with chat boxes, honestly. Spammers are not as common as people make them seem And if you have a handful of decent members, they usually keep the c-box clean Like, only once have I seen anything CLOSE to an "issue" in the c-box And it was a girl making a comment most of us found insulting, but she didn't. And then she argued with the admins about it in the chat box But really, that's a very small percentage of people who use them I think that a lot of people have one bad experience, and they shoot them down for good.
I find them particularly useful for dealing with guests, who don't know if they want to join. It makes asking small questions that feel insignificant for a thread a lot easier And it gives guests an idea of how members interact without having to dig into the boards. Especially considering I hide most of the boards from non-members .

I use chatboxes for role-playing forums and forums that are meant to be more interactive with faster chatting capabilities then you can get from threads.
I still have a so so attitude about them. Some of them are far to easy to use and scores of members have ignored the site's forums and features, chatting only in the chatbox, and recommending the staff add something to site that has always existed. Which is frustrating to choke down and work up a, "Thank you for your suggestion." without wanting to post something about how that was the blondest thing you've ever seen someone post.
At the same time, I do agree that it does come in handy when you need to help a member who does not have an IM. It's faster to walk them through things and they're eager to use the chat box because it doesn't require a download.
I guess it all depends on your preference and the members willingness to post in various parts of you site. For me I have the chatbox as a "members only" feature that is available in certain areas of the site. Since doing that it's been far less frustrating for the staff and me and the site has picked up in activity a lot more.

I personally have a c-box and I don't think it takes any activity away from my forum. I use it as a way of just chatting to my members, and of maybe getting quick questions out of the way. Sometimes I've had guests post a comment about the board, and I can persuade them to join. Plus it shows guests taht the admin/members have a sense of humour, and are willing to joke around. Being the admin, sometimes people feel you don't want to goof off, as you're normally the one enforcing the rules and posting 'proper' information. And despite me trying to 'be a regular member' I still have that ADMIN title stamped on me. So I love my c-box, purely because I feel like taht regular joe who can goof off.
This is all from personal opinions and experiences, I'm not sure how right or wrong it is.

I'm part of a large variety of forums with chat boxes, but they're mainly role play forums. I have to admit, only one forum has decreased in activity, role playing wise. Other than that, I say they're all good.
Though, I've had one forum spam in a c box because they decided we're 'rival forums'. Two completley different genres and on two completely different role play levels, but eh.

For me it's either way, but I don't really appreciate them on my board because when I first opened it, there were no posts for a long time--but the CBox had been in use for almost the entire period of time >.< I removed it and the forum became active.

I think chatbox's are a great way to communicate with guests, so you don't force them to join and then they ask you like what? One question and be gone. As for the spamming part, I haven't seen many chatbox's that get spammed up by members. Usually they take it through PM or they'd make a board about it and make it everyone's problem...I guess it all falls down to how mature your members are... if they aren't very mature than I suggest not having a chatbox but, if they know to reply to threads on the actual forum than try it out. Though I highly recommend it for RPG forums, since most forums have a chat place on the actual forum but, whats the point of making a new thread if it might be just one simple question. Just make rules for the chatbox that others follows and threaten them to remove it if they constantly break those rules.

I have a C-Box on my site, but it's suppossed to be there mainly for talking to people while you're trying to type in a long RP on another area of the site. However, I had to hide it unless you log in, because spambots and spamming guests love those things. I've had some spamming issues from guests on it, so it can be a plus AND a minus, unless you take certain precautions. Yes, it does tend to take away from your forum activity, and I've felt compelled to remove it a couple of times, but I also fear that would also drive the people away if they didn't want to post.

We have a cbox and so far all the active members use it. It's great to leave quick messages for members about special posts or contest. Not everyone goes to the announcment board so they are more likey to see it in the cbox.

I like to use the C-box simply because i've got tons of people trying to figure out what the forums about and to ask a few quick questions that they could't expect to get a quick enough response in from the general boards or a PM. I've had guests really appreaciate the help i've given them and they even ended up joining. As for spamming, that has never happened to me. NOT ONCE! which is amazing, i've never gotten any spammers or anyone trying to screw up the order that i've established on my board. For me C-Box works well and is provides a way to chat while someone is typing up a post for their RP posts

To me, the forum content should be pretty clear, so the need for a Chatbox is pretty useless. Plus, most times, unless they are for members only, they get spammed by spam bots or people that just happen through and find it. To me, they are just not the most secure form of communication and I don't like forums to look cluttered with that sort of mess. It might just be that all of mine have been bad experiences. I think an add-on chat where everyone logs in as their username is much more helpful to a forum.

I've been on sites with cboxes and sites without them. The two RP sites I'm currently active on both have cboxes, and I think they are very handy for seeing who's online (who's actually active, I mean; as opposed to people who aren't actually online anymore but whose names still show up in the online list because they've been gone less than 10 minutes). They're also good for quickly finding people to RP with, in my experience, or for quick messages about when you'll be gone or when you'll be back. On those RP forums, the cboxes haven't detracted from the board activity at all; they've actually helped me get more involved in the community as a whole, so overall I definitely prefer sites with cboxes.
However, on my personal site, where I'm the actual admin, we do not have a cbox. It's not an RP site, just a chat site/fan forum. So since it's just a normal discussion board, in this case I feel that having a cbox would detract from the board activity. In addition to that, for a while there were a few members who were really good at...let's say, pushing each other's buttons. My staff members and I couldn't guarantee that there would always be someone online to make sure things wouldn't get out of hand; we couldn't even prevent that from happening occasionally in the forum itself, so I can't imagine what it might have been like with a cbox or chatroom. Thankfully, there isn't much of that kind of drama anymore; but the overall activity level has also gone down pretty drastically since the board opened (3 1/2 years ago), so I don't think putting in a cbox would make any sense now.

I think Chat Boxes are good as long as the member don't abuse it.
If they can use it without breaking the rules, and can still stay active Role-Playing or Posting on a site, then I have no problem with it.
One role-playing forum I am a member of, we had a C-Box and it was limiting the posting that was going on in the forum, so the admin had to take it away until we started posting more again. The site currently has a C-Box again, but we got it back with a warning, letting us know that it could quickly go away again if the members are not actively posting on the site.
