I make my forum 728 pixels wide. It fits nicely in most screens, even in 800x600 it won't look to bad. Also, the google ads are 728 pixels wide, and it helps to make the board even. Personally, I vote against percentages, because that way you cant use intergrated backgrounds, and the forum will look slightly different for people with differing resolutions. If you use a pixel amount, you can be sure that the forum will look almost the same for everyone. Not that percentages don't have their advantages. ~Ork.

I've always used 800x600, and I'm not that smart with computer programming. I don't know how to change the resolution on my computer to preview everything in different resolutions. We recently acquired a laptop, and its resolution was set at 1024x768. I didn't particularly like what I saw, we'll leave it at that. Slightly offtopic, but you should be able to right click on your desktop and click on Properties. This brings up something called the Display Properties box. Then you click on the tab called Settings and on my pc it has a slider thingie that lets you slide it to the size of resolution that you want. The screen resolution will then change, and if I remember right, it will give you a count down as to whether you want to keep changes. You can say yes, and see if you like it and if not, you go back and redo it all, turning it back down to the 800x600 you originally had, or to try the other sizes before deciding. Ok On Topic:I use only 800x600 as I have very bad eyes and trying to view websites and such in any other resolution is nearly impossible for me. I therefore set up my board to be seen in 800x600 and let the user change their own pc to whatever resolution they wish. As to cross browser codes, I've asked my members what browser they are using and all have said IE so I don't worry about whether it is cross-browser coded at this time. If someone told me they were using Opera or FF or whatever, I'd try to make sure that what I see looks good in their browser also. I keep FF on my pc just to be able to check when it is necessary.

Hm, this is something pretty interesting, I've never actually stopped and thought about how a forum looks in different resolutions. I mean, I've made sure all the codes are cross browser, that's nothing new to me, but I've never actually encountered the screen issue before.
This topic is actually quite a good thing for me, because now I've checked my forum out in 800 by 600, and fixed the length of the boards to where it doesn't stretch the screen.

Unfortunately for me, my computer resolution is set at 800x600 and I can't change it. I didn't realize this until after receiving comments on my board at GOAYB about my background images tiling. I almost freaked out because I have no way of changing my resolution and I didn't know of any way to change the images to fit other resolutions. Until Photobucket allowed that. I now can change all my images to whatever size I want, and it really helps. =) Although I can't see any changes, many members now say that it's no longer tiling. I was practically bouncing around my room for weeks.
As for cross browser codes, most codes I see are only IE and FF cross. This sometimes brings problems for those using other browsers, but fortunately for me, most of my members are using IE and FF. So all I can say is, be aware of what codes you use.
Hope that helps =)

An effective way of setting your forum width would be giving it in Percentages rather than pixels. This is ensure your forum would look the same around all computers with different screen resolutions. Giving the condition that you have a resizable banner. D.D A resizable banner? The only way to get a banner that resizes itself based on screen resolution is JavaScript, and that would just look messy. When the Internet resizes images on itself, especially when it only resizes in one aspect (e.g. only resizes width and not height), images get pixely, squishy, and are just overall awful in appearance. Also, if you set it to percentages you can't have vertical border backgrounds, which are becoming increasingly popular among Proboarders. Whatever the case, it's so much easier and just as effective to keep your forum set on exact pixels in width. I always make my forum anywhere from 700-720 pixels wide so that it looks good in both 800x600 and 1024x768. ^^ I'm also a big fan of tiled backgrounds. -waves a banner- I always check my site in Opera, FireFox, and IE, though the only browser I use is FF, and I only use codes that I know are CB. I've been to sites and forums that are only IE-compatible and I know how much it ticks me off, so I try to keep everyone happy by double-checking. I do have something to add here, though. It's something that I've noticed a lot of FF and Opera users haven't seen. For gradients it is, of course, logical for us to use either the bottom or top color for the background color so that it should continue seamlessly without looking stretched in the case that your data cell height on your table exceeds the height of your gradient. But, in IE, this doesn't work! For some reason, even if you match the exact hex code from your image, the background color will be different unless it is either black or white. Therefore, while choosing a background color to match might be nice, it's best to just make sure that your gradients are tall enough in the first place so that IE-users don't frown at them. ;]

I like having my forum width at 700 px. I hate forums that are squished, or that are too wide. So I find 700 right in between those. As for back ground images, I like to have the image size close to the 1024x860 whatever. Because a lot of people have that screen resolution. And if their monitor is smaller, it doesnt really matter since they will still see most of the background image.

pm me on how to put a youtube video on my avatar That is not possible and please dont post in this area unless you have something to say that is on topic. And I agree with An Error Has Occured. 700px is pretty much perfect.
