Look at it this way 500 members 2000 posts that means on average that your members have only made 4 post each unlikey yes I know but possible, now i looked at a forum today that had just under 600 members I think but had over 78,000 posts which would you rather see as a prospective member browsing for a forum to join!
Therefore as a admin I think post count is waaaaaayyy more important than members

I think the members join and look at all the posts and how active the people are. Because i found out that most people like being active on sites that have tons of posts daily . Also they need lots of members for lots of posts unless everyones active at same time.

Really for me it depends on what type of person I'm looking to be. I know that sounds bad as if I can change my personality, but rather do I think I'm going to have time to post due to my schedule as well as other things. If it's the summer and hours are a dime a dozen, then i'm going to look for a boad with alot of members simply because boards with alot of members often have the people who will be nice to everyone that's new and as long as your not plain out mean, you'll always have a friend. Then later on down the road, I like meeting people that have 2,000 posts but you never realized you guys have so much in common. It's like you can constantly build your friend list...
If I join a small forum, I typically won't post there much just because isn't my kind of thing. I'll post my opinion in there once and then leave. If someone disagrees, then that's alright but I typically won't step back into that thread just because most discussions lead to arguments in my past experiences.

I also look at how many members there are first.

To tell you the truth I do not look at either at first . I look for a neat , inviting looking forum and if that pleases me then I check out their posts . I seldom look at member count unless it is an older forum . An unactive forum is not worth my time .

Really, I don't join forums anymore. I'm on enough as it is I only look for affiliates these days, having my own Roleplay site. I know that Guests can't see everything, so first I see how many boards Guests have access to. Then I check to 10 most recent posts. If the last couple of posts is today or yesterday, I know the site is active enough. However, if I as a Guest can only see one or two boards I can't use that method. In which case I usually loose interest anyway ^-^ I want to have a better idea of the general feel of the site before I join it. I have a quick glance at the member count, knowing that a site with lots of members is more likely to be active than one with two. I don't really check to post count that much... a bit too small on the screen XP

Well, I have to disagree. I have gone to sites with thousands of members that haven't had any of them post in months. They also had a small post count, so they weren't very active in the first place. A lot of times, it could just be the admin creating new accounts to raise their member count with hopes that more people will come joining because they will think that it is more active. You always want to look at the post count because it shows that a forum has active members, that, and if you check the recent posts link in the info table (most of the time).
