Well....Cbox's always present the problem of other people advertising in it and they do get spammed. I have heard a recent member has had trouble with Cbox's because someone had been posting perverted things in it and he had young members there and he had to resort to getting a Cbox premium i think. Take my KH site for example. A member had been advertising in it and other people had been joining. Therefor I lost my members. So on my new Zelda site I have decided not to get a Cbox This thread is about chatrooms on a forum, not shoutboxes. Chatrooms and shoutboxes are two completely different things.

I don't think chatroom are that good of an idea on a forum. You can't moderate them and it leaves the board open to spam/advertising. I think it would take away from the forum and it would seem inactive to guests and they wouldn't join.

The rule which xkamelx was referring to (from that link he provided), was the following rule: That's the only rule that I've seen (while posting in this board), that everyone seems to break lol (must be a virus) ;D You may have to be aware that just because you've typed about 4 sentences in your posting area, doesn't necessarily mean that it will appear that you've posted 4 sentences. Know what I mean? I don't think chatroom are that good of an idea on a forum. You can't moderate them and it leaves the board open to spam/advertising. I think it would take away from the forum and it would seem inactive to guests and they wouldn't join. True CMD, you can't really moderate the chatrooms and the only way to get your chatroom secure is usually by buying it's premium features or by use of a javascript code. As a matter of fact, if guests are so eager to post on a forum, they should have the audacity to register to be able to post. I wouldn't mind them viewing whatever I put on my forum etc, but posting as a guest is a complete no no in my books, the reason is obvious, but just for the record, it is because they'll just spam it up (and banning them by ip won't work either as they'll easily login through proxy or go on another computer and continue to unleash spamming chaos, which of course is again no good

The extra addition of a chatroom/shoutbox whatever you want to call it can save having to have msn, aim, skype plus any others you are signed up for all open at the same time if who you know has access to your forum with it in, saving resources on your system to do other things.

The main reason I do is so that it doesn't matter who your with you can all come to one place and discuss whatever you want with anyone. If after that you want to speak to someone in private away from the central conversation then thats up to you, but in the mean time by chatting in a central location you could have got another friend that you may have missed because one uses msn and the other aim. It was just a random thought at the time i set it up - mind you not everyone will agree but that's ok

I don't really like chatrooms on a board. We had on for our old board (which was a PB-board) that we use till this very date, but it's hardly ever used (only once to hold a staff meeting in). We only put it in because members wanted it so much.
I've been on a site where a chatroom actually worked in combination with a forum, so it most certainly can work, but in most other cases I consider it a big failure and totally unnecessary.
Personally, I find IM chats (AIM, MSN or YIM) much easier (besides the fact that I don't really like the controls to IRC) and if I must use a chatroom, I'd rather have one in YIM than anywhere else. They're (IMO at least) more personal and private too, as only invited people can enter, not some random guy who stumbles upon your chatroom's IRC channel (our previous staff meeting had an uninvited guest, we had to kick him out before we could continue).

I used to have one but no one used it. So I got rid of it. It does defeat the purpose of the forum though.
Forums are like IM's but you can "IM" someone when they are offline and when they get back on they'll see your message.
c boxes and such also get annoying on alot of forums. They're big and clunky and disruptive.

I really dont advise chat rooms to be in a small forum, though i was in a large forum years ago who have had that forum for about 2 years and added a chat room. I thought it was a fanataic idea since everyone knew eatch other on the forum and was very familure with one another and chated. They still posted on the forum as ushall but it was just a fun way to talk to other members
I still dont advise new forums to use it though

I actually do use a c-box on my forum, and I find that it's been rather successful. However, I think it depends on the type of forum. For example, mine's an RP forum, so a lot of the posts have to be in character.
While we do have boards to chat with that are out of character, the c-box is faster, and really brings people together. I find that my members have really gotten to know one another, and it makes for a more fun environment.
We also have a seperate chat room, which is mostly used for plotting within the site, especially by the admins.
So, over all, I think they're great ideas for an RP forum, if not for any other type.

"We also have a seperate chat room, which is mostly used for plotting within the site, especially by the admins." ^ Sorry. Should've focused more on that. ^^; I still think the same thing applies, though. Chat rooms can be good for role playing forums, at the very least. People can plot and stuff, and get to know one another, since most of the forum is in character.
