What would it be like if we weren't given the choice... Which would be worse to be subjected to?
In my opinion, the upsides of each option are pretty evenly matched... but so are the downsides. The real problem come in when our choice is not the one we get stuck with... IE: those for the "Guests must Login" mode should try running the site where they cannot activate the function and those against it should try running a forum with the function activated...
The "for"s may find some redeeming aspects of the function, while the "against"s may find redeeming aspects of the lack thereof...
I think we shouldn't be so quick to judge until we've experienced both. Only then can we make an informed decision.
I have tried using the function, but as my forum is still new, it acts as too much of a deterrent for my potential users. When I have need of a useful deterrent, I will probably use it.

If I were asked >.> I'd have to say that Guests Must Log-In isn't the best idea. Though it could work both ways depending on how you want your board to be...
If you want a large active board: GML would be on of the worse idea, in my opinion. It's true that it'll protect the board, but as with everything else, to a certain extent. GML wouldn't allow guests to roam around the board, view things, see how active it is, and give them an idea of whether or not they want to join... -shrugs-
If you want a small board: GML might be able to help more here, viewing and the what-not wouldn't matter as much if you're recruiting your friends over everyone. GML may be more of some use seeing as how it'll protect your board more, and keep unwanted "n00bs" from joining more-so then no GML.
But I, personally, think it's a waste of energy...

I have a board that targets a very specific group - esp. parents. Local events are planned and for security reasons I do not want Joe Schmoe to be able to see what events are being planned where.
I do have a few 'teaser' areas that the general public can see. Yes, I want to build my board to have a lot more active members, but a lot of the members that are logging in regularly are lurking already.
From a totally different approach - people want to get their money's worth. Something for nothing is usually valued as worthless. Yes membership is free, but if people have to go through the trouble of registering & logging in to read it then chances are they will see it as more valuable.
Just my two cents!

Well I have a board for my co-workers and when I went on vacation a few trolls whated to start some problems and one of my Global Moderator"s e-mailed me and told me about this issure. She banned these trolls for trying to start problems .With some of my co-workers going thur grocery contract talks across the nation I refused to appove anf new members because past history on other sites I have been at where the owner lefted the Moderator with out the power to ban .

I don't like the Guests Must Login feature as many people will be turned off by such a board. I for one wouldn't want to be bothered to join just to view a site, no matter if it's a topic I really like, like Metroid. I like to see what are in the boards, and read the site rules, as if I disagree to the site rules I don't join.
Now I can understand not wanting to get your content steal, but if someone is really that much of a thief they will come on and steal what they can anyways, I can understand viewing some boards only for members to see but still some things should be seen for guests. Private and small sites can get away with having this enable, but any admin that want their site to get big need to allow the content of that board to be viewable to guests, and not allow guests to post also.
So I guess it all depends on the "case" of what the site wants. If you want lots of members this feature is useless and a major con to your site. If you only want a certain group of people and such then this feature is a pro to your site. Usually for many sites it's the formal which is why I'm mostly against the feature being in used.

Our boards are open to many people, so the things I will allow non-members to see are made public and the others are for registered users only. I moderate all sign ups and members are required to use game names or they will be deleted from our roster.
Pretty simple so far...

I hate it when guests must log in. What if someone is asking for an opinion on their board. I've come across that a lot in GOAYB and I can't stand it. I'm not going to join to find out what the site is even about. It's too much of a hassle and too much trouble. I actually think it only hurts the owners of the site because a lot of guests aren't going to join to be able to even just look at the site. Now, I can understand for posting reasons why you might want guests to sign in. I understand that completely. I don't want non-members posting on my board. But that's a different situation. For viewing purposes, guests should not be obligated to log in.

I think that if you have the GML than people just don't worry about it and they go away, but if you don't have it than they might actually consider joining. It's just athing with some people now that the more energy it takes doing something than it's not worth it. Just an opinion.

Depends on the type of forum- if it's a public forum, no, private, possibly (though on my 'CHFair Trade, which is private, I don't have it!)

Just my personal thoughts on this:
For public forums, I think that using the 'Guests Must Log-In' feature in an attempt to get members to sign up isn't a good idea. For the most part, it will likely motivate most guests to do the opposite; lose interest in the forum and not sign-up at all. The only guests that will sign up is if there is something on the forum that they want access to badly or genuinely wish to join.
If the forums were for private reasons (i.e. online game clan/guild, personal family/friends, etc.), then it would be good idea, as you don't want strangers to freely view your forum threads. For example, a clan/guild for an online game would not want a rival clan/guild to spy on them by seeing and viewing all of their game discussions and strategies.

I don't use "Guest Must Log-In" so that they have a chance to see the forum before they join. On the other hand, they might not like what they see and go away. As of right now, I'm thinking about switching them all to Guest Must Log-In to see what happens. Some people say it's bad but I've seen forums that use it and they have a lot of members.
