On my forum, I made a rule that says that if you do not post 2 times during your first month on the forum, your account will be deleted. I dislike inactive accounts greatly. I've seen forums that have like 1,000 members but only about 30 are active.

I'm new to running a forum, but I love going on them and I'm a member on several forums. I can see where deleting would be necessary for RP, but my board is for discussion of a hobby, so I don't think I'll delete anyone because I know my theme for my board is kind of obscure and I don't expect people to have something to say every day.
This is just my opinion, but I've been on a few forums where if you don't log in for a week they delete you. I believe this is a little harsh, unless you're doing roleplay.

I've seen forums that have like 1,000 members but only about 30 are active. I could not agree more with you! I don't know what it is about inactive accounts that just gets under my skin, but they really drive me crazy. Maybe that's just me being obsessive compulsive about organization, I don't know. I just feel that if you hit & run a site (join and never come back), then your account deserves to be deleted. Also, when I see sites with super duper high member counts I feel intimidated to join - but that's just me! ^_^;;

I do clean outs whenever I see the amount of users online daily is less then the member count. I send out a PM, an Email, and post a message on the site so everybody who is active knows it's coming. It goes on for like, two weeks, and I'm usually too lazy to do anything about it for another week, so members have plenty of time to post, and inactive accounts have time to come back and be active. I don't quite understand sites that must have 200 members when the amount active doesn't matter. If I'm looking for a site to join, I look at the member count, then active members. If the site has 30 members with 2 active, no way I'll join. But if it's 7 members and 7 online daily, sounds good! (:

Maybe I'm weird or maybe it's just because I use a screen reader and we navigate a site differently, but I don't think I've ever looked at member statistics in my life. I basically look at whether new posts are coming.

I personally don't see a problem in having inactive accounts. People generally have a busy life and can't post all the time or become uninterested in the forum then come back when they are interested again. It's not wrong to have a love hate relationship with a forum to be honest. I lost interest in a couple forums I have been active in for a year or so. I've recently came back to one of the forums.
However, I do think accounts that have barely any posts that have been inactive for 1 or 2 months should be deleted. Chances are, those people will never return to the forum.
The only downside to having inactive members is an inaccurate member count and people wondering why there is less activity for a forum that has so many members.

Inactive accounts are fine, if the Member has posted and shown an interest in the Forum at some stage, we all lead busy lives...Those who have never posted since joining our Forum get deleted after a reasonable amount of time...It works for us, and the Member count is then accurate.

On the webmaster forum i super moderate at, the forum is 10 years old and we have members who come and go every few years but we will not delete inactive accounts. If you delete members accounts it will mess up your forum stat's as in the total threads/total posts. Also if some people quoted that members posts in the past, they will be quoting thing air as the posts was removed.
I've seen members who been inactive for 5 years come back because they needed help again, then we moderators trying to get the member to stay active by explaining what he or she missed out on in the past few years. Sometimes people forget they have an account on your forum. If a mass email doesn't bring those inactive members back, you might then consider deleting them but i don't like the idea of deleting someones account.
If a member wants his information removed from your forum, he or she can delete there own account.

On lots of other sites I've been on, members have returned after about 2 years, stayed on for about a week, then gone inactive again.

On a number of forums I rarely post. I prefer that inactive accounts not be deleted because some members are like comets and only flash by once in a great while.

When I visit a site and see that it has over 200 members, but only 4 of them have visited in the past 24 hours it looks kinda bad. I would prefer that the member count actually reflect the realistic number. When I am the admin of a site I tend to do activity checks every 4 or 5 months. I think it gives a more accurate view on the 'active' members.

I delete inactive accounts as I like to have somewhat of a "small community". Although there are still over 100 members on my forum, with only about 20 or so active members.. When I do delete inactive accounts, I search members who have not logged in the past 90 days and delete ones with zero posts. I do this every couple months or so.

Personally the smaller the community the better on a board. I find the ones with a "million" members just doesn't work and most new members get ignored and leave. Now to have a "million" members that are inactive, or a ton of character accounts not being used is worse. I usually clean out my member accounts once a month. I'd rather have the number reflect how many people are actually on the board, then give the illusion "it's busy and active".
