many people use the forum as an information source, if they are deleted for not posting regularly, then it defeats the point of the forum Ours isn't a role-play forum, so it might be different from my perspective than from the perspective of a role-play forum admin. Ours is an informational forum for those who are seeking financial/investment advice, primarily. We also discuss current events, politics, and just about everything else. We do have lurkers who read for quite a long time before they decide to actually post. I can see it might be different for those who have role-play forums that require interaction from their posters in order to further the story-line(s). Those wouldn't be forums where folks would be seeking information. Those people, however, might lurk for awhile to get a feel for the role-play before they begin to take part. I'm just not that familiar with that type of forum.

I agree, mmhmm.
We're not an RPG forum either. So rules probably do vary depending on the forum type.
Ours is information, informal and a little bit of this and that.
It's also open for all to read ~ and our members know that and are aware of that fact.
So posting anything sensitive and personal where identity might be compromised has never been done for that reason.

This is interesting. As a former co-admin and new admin to an RPG forum, I can see reason to delete and reason to not delete accounts.
For the most part, I would likely lean towards not deleting accounts in the case that members would return, especially if the character had a key role in the developing plot. Also, I might be too nice and too nervous to delete another person's account.
But then there is the point I had read was made earlier in this thread: member vs post/thread count. An RPG forum admin wouldn't want the forum statistics to reflect a large mostly-inactive community. At least from my perspective, a smaller highly-active community is a much better option.
Still, I'm not sure what I would do if the time came. Guess I'll be crossing that bridge at some point.

To me if a person is inactive they will most likely stay inactive; but I understand this is not always the case. I wouldn't want to keep users on my website that aren't going to use it, so I would delete them from the website and they have to make another account if they wanted to come back in the future.

I'm not sure this is part of the debate but I am looking for a middle ground in case the time comes.
Do disabled and/or banned members still show up in the member count? I suppose disabled member accounts would show since they can still log in but the banned members?
Basically, I am wondering if the option to archive an account for inactivity could be an option.

Yes, they do. They still count because the account itself is still there, and the person is considered a member in case they are unbanned at some point down the line.

Guess I really was just looking for a middle ground. Something to keep the member count reflective of the active member-base and yet not need to delete member accounts in the case they wish to return.

I know what you mean, like place them a group that doesn't show up in total member count. More or less "hide" these accounts from the final tally. I still want an option for username change. >.>

Back to the topic, it is obviously a personal choice that with pros and cons on both sides. Makes it hard to choice (for some at least).

Personally, I never delete an account unless a long period of time goes by and they have never made a post. I do, however, keep accurate member counts in a 'Stat' section. To sort out the inactive accounds, I made a member group labeled 'dead' and do not include them in the stats.

How would you define inactive? By posts? Because on my forum, a lot of people go and lurk only for information. They are too shy to post. So I would certainly not delete any accounts where they had been viewing the forum. But I would consider those that signed up and have never been back.

I would certainly delete those who sign up but never post even once and never come back. In my opinion, visitors to forums are interested in how many 'posting' members there are - not how many are registered or how many are just 'reading' the forum. I personally don't see the point in joining a forum if I don't intend to post there.
I do think though that before deleting someone, it should be taken into account that there could be a valid reason for a member not posting. Perhaps there is illness or other difficulties at home or maybe the member is unable to get online for other reasons. While it may seem an appealing idea to have a strict 'delete non posters' rule - I think that individual circumstances.should be taken into account.
