that's a really broad question. before you worry about 'technique', i'd concentrate on familiarising yourself with the tools in photoshop. the techniques you learn are reliant entirely on the style you want to achieve.

i do recommend learning some basics, though, such as: the rule of thirds (which I linked to above), adjustment layers, image adjustments, depth (this is a good beginner's explanation), colour saturation, and lighting (this is a decent explanation, though there are other ones out there that are better as you get more comfortable with PS).

this is by no means an extensive list, but it should get you started.

Okay. Thing is, I have a hard time finding good renders of characters that I like. (not some random one)

Some people just have good renders, and just adding effects make it better.

well, once you're comfortable with renders, you may want to spread out to stocks. ;] gives you more to work with, i'm finding out. </rusty skills>

no, that's a transparent .png, i believe i got it from PlanetRenders.
i didn't start using stocks until sig portfolio 3 (on my dA).
