PB Templates: A lost art?

I still see a few promising artists on this board, and Smangii seems to pop in every so often to share some random amazing work, but the majority of templates now seem to be those generic side-tables, wide banner, split categories, etc..

It seems like skinning ProBoards has become something akin to designing a MySpace template...

But yes, everyone wants to have a template/skin that is readable and just like everyone elses. (I'm not so sure why)

Coding is what makes about 99% of a ProBoards skin possible, and not everyone knows how to, or someone to, code a skin for them.

Hopefully v5 will change that

I hope so too. I really do miss all the sleek, innovative skins that used to be so common. I don't have Windows anymore or else I'd break out CS5 and start designing again.. Perhaps I will, who knows.

In the meantime, I'll keep my fingers crossed for some bored-to-death coder and an adept graphic designer to get together.

Yup, I agree with Smangii.

As I've said in another thread, look for the coding and design communities to become more active when V5 is released.

V5 is the factor here. With it being so imminent (it is in closed beta now), many of the designers and coders are just waiting for it to come out. It has been said that there will be a template engine that will allow forum admins to completely control the layout of their forum, so it should be much, much easier to do the coding end of the theme creation process, as well as open up possibilities for the design process.

I think I've done a pretty good job on my forum design, in all honesty. I designed it a year and a half ago, so it is abit outdated. Considering it's a gold/orange theme, it is readable and looks very sleek.

As already mentioned, it's just a matter of V5 being released to produce better skins.

When V5 is released, I will be working on a sexy skin for Zatch Design.

Your forum does look quite nice, Kim. I miss those rounded-corners styles we used to see all the time. Those interface skins, like the one that ProVision uses, are also among my favorites.

i don't think it's just the lack of coders, and whatnot, but i personally have no desire to do more templates (with different coding) if all people are going to do is use the codes because they're too lazy to find them on their own. i'm not some super great template designer or anything, but when i make templates, i expect them to be used in their entirety (obviously with site-specific modifications), but i keep seeing my copyright (intended for my graphics, ofc) attached to sites i've not done graphics for because they took coding off my templates. =/

i mean, if i'm going to put all that work into a design, the least people could do is use it.

v5 will see a mad rush with loads of new templates. I've been working on a few concepts - after a long time - but I'm also waiting for v5

Now that it's not 5am...

Lack of coders, v5 coming up, the general shift of forums towards RPGs....it all adds up. I'm hoping v5 gives the PB graphics side of things another blast, the loss of graphics design forums and communities has been one of PB's biggest losses imo (not that I'm unbiased or anything).

This is what I'm hoping anyway. So cliched, but a return to the golden age would be nice. Will it happen? I don't know.

I think we are all just waiting for v5. We won't know if all our skins and codes we make will even work.
